Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Brewer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Michael, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
A while back when my daughter stated that I was the smartest person she knew, I responded that I’m not even close to being the smartest person in my family but that I am really strong at problem solving and getting myself out of a jam! While being a quick thinker and problem solver has certainly helped me numerous times in my life, my perseverance and belief in myself that I can accomplish most anything I put my mind to. My resilience is fortified by the knowledge that my daughter is counting on me. This reaffirms my commitment to different things and gives me the strength and mindset to push through challenges.
Growing up, I was lucky enough to have wonderful role models to show me what resilience looked like and it even led me to create a children’s book centered around childhood experiences during The Great Depression for my Masters Degree capstone project. Having role models and wonderful influences like my grandparents and others from their generation showed me not only what true hardship looked and sounded like but also that a person’s will, spirit, drive, and desire could enable them to endure and succeed through difficult challenges.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My priority as a financial planner with Northwestern Mutual is to help my clients achieve financial security. Any financial discussion we have focuses on their lives, their goals, and their priorities. I specialize in aligning a client’s finances with their lifestyle, strategizing methods for achieving different life goals, and guiding them through the planning process. My team and I construct holistic, comprehensive plans with the flexibility to address a range of financial options and bring their big picture dreams into focus. My goal is to help alleviate financial stress so my clients can focus their energy and attention on who and what matters most to you.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My professional journey working in financial services is relatively new but it builds upon my previous career as a teacher and school administrator. My ability to make complicated concepts understandable and accessible to clients is one strength that has certainly transferred over to the world of financial services. Another strength that also ties in to a piece of advice is to listen openly and wholeheartedly to your clients. Learn who they truly are and what their personal, professional, and financial priorities are because only then will it allow you how to best serve them and their needs. My other word of advice is that you don’t have to know everything or have every answer. Ask your colleagues for assistance. Accept coaching and support. People have been in your position before you so learn from them rather than trying to take it all on independently.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone that wants to create financial security for themselves and their family. They see the value in forming an ongoing relationship with me and want to work in a collaborative manner to achieve their goals. They don’t have to have things in place right now but are eager to move in a positive financial direction with their life.
