Meet Michaela Robinson

We recently connected with Michaela Robinson and have shared our conversation below.

Michaela, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from my determination to achieve what I’m working towards and my preparation for the obstacles I may face. I believe we have to understand that most things that are worth having won’t come easy. Understanding the “why” of our end goal is what helps motivate us to get it done, regardless of the challenges we may have to face.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Candle design is a huge passion of mine. Bringing all the elements together to create a perfect candle for my customer brings me so much joy. I enjoy offering my customers the luxury candle experience without the luxury price tag.

Although every custom order brings me excitement to create, wedding orders are my favorite. Being able to create a keepsake for someone’s special day is an indescribable feeling.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important skills I’ve picked up are multitasking, confidence, and being open-minded.

I had to understand that multitasking isn’t just how much work you can get done at once, but how to complete multiple tasks efficiently by prioritizing what’s most important. Multitasking without a plan to complete everything effectively, will leave you extremely overwhelmed and burned out.

Developing more creativity as the months/years go on as a business owner is critical. Confidence is what sparks my individuality and creativity. Having the confidence to create from passion and inspiration, not from what’s expected, was vital.

Becoming open-minded was something I struggled with at the start of my business. Being receptive to change and understanding the necessity of change is what helped me develop as a candlemaker and as a business owner.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I’m overwhelmed, I have to remind myself that I can only do so much and to not stress over anything that isn’t in my control. Take a step back, prioritize what’s most important, and tackle that first. But also be mindful that your health should be at the top of that list. You’re not a robot. Do as much as you’re able, and the rest will be there to tackle the next day.
