We were lucky to catch up with Michelob Williamson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelob, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is probably one of my strongest traits. Life has given me no choice but to be resilient with nothing to lose. I didn’t have the easiest childhood growing up. My mother had left me when I was only 6 years old, so I was raised by my Father. I got to learn resilience at a young age from watching my Dad as he raised me. When you come from poverty, it takes resilience to survive. Maybe sometime down the road I’ll go into more detail about my upbringing, but we’ll keep that in the dark for now. From the ripe fresh age of 18 to where I am now life has thrown it’s fair share of hurdles at me from homelessness to jail and heartbreak and I’ve seen what cards other people have been dealt and like, if people can overcome circumstances harder than my own then what kind of man am I to not overcome my own ?
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I honestly don’t feel that my story is really any more special than anyone else’s. The things I’ve overcome I just hope can be of motivation to someone out there in the world. Hell I just want to motivate and inspire people period. I make music from the soul and I’m still early on in my journey. For me music isn’t just a career or money or status but it’s also magic. With each new song I write I get better at this and it’s such a painfully slow process but it’s exciting because it’s a way I can challenge myself to improve on something daily. I’d have to say the absolute best part is when i get to showcase songs, especially new ones, on the stage. Which speaking of new music I’m currently in the process of putting together a bunch of music to release over the course of the next year as well as adding new designs to my current inventory of merchandise. I’ve got big plans for the next year so be on the lookout!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would have to say my background knowledge of music (even if it’s basic), my vast taste of music from 70s rock to rap, and my natural internal metronome would be the most impactful thing in my music journey. Nowadays I can see the lack of life people put into music and music is a living thing it needs to flow and progress and have motion to it. Even the most basic laid out track can still be given life. So my advice to people who are even newer in their journey than I am is to let your music guide you and learn whatever you can. The more you know, the more control you have over your dream.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I might answer a few questions in one here, but I’d have to say my manager and mentor Philip Terry has been the most helpful in my development. This day and age it’s easy for anyone to just be an independent artist but it’s not the easiest to do it alone and so having a team you can trust is imperative. We’re still overcoming challenges today like finding someone who wants to compose tracks. Everyone wants to be the next Dr. Dre I feel like and do try to do everything themselves. I’m always down for collaboration, but finances is a really big challenge right now because everyone’s struggling to survive.
