Meet Mitchell “KMA” Campbell

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mitchell “KMA” Campbell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mitchell “KMA”, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
One of the things I’ve been consistent on throughout my music career is taking time to just do/enjoy regular life. I’ve picked up a few hobbies like sewing for instance, just to learn a skill. I’ve also tapped into to just being present in my family & friends lives. For me it’s all about perspective. There are times when I’m “in my zone” and that competitiveness and relentlessness can can block my judgement. That’s not a great place for “Creativity”. It’s okay to take a step back from this space and gain a different perspective on life. For me that looks like learning a new skill that I’m not talented at. I can learn how to just work hard (and fail) to get better at something. Also it’s being around people who aren’t involved in or just aren’t only speaking about something that I’m usually being competitive at. This teaches me that everyone has their own goals, we all have our own race to run. Now when I go back into writing it’s from my own space of creativity. I just hung out with some people that taught me something new because we’re not doing the same things in our spare time. I guess my short answer would be; meet new people and try some new things.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an artist/songwriter. The most exciting part about that is when I find the words that are synonymous to the sounds and the feelings that I’m generating.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 qualities that have helped me early on was being a student, clapping for myself, and seeing the full picture or the “end game”. I suggest you learn as much as you can early on. It’s ok to be in the huddle and just listen. Sometimes it’s ok to be on the sideline and just watch, only sometimes though. Once you actually watch you can decide the good parts you want out of whatever you’re doing and you can avoid the bad parts. You have to understand that nobody owes you any support. Learn to clap for yourself in these moments, it stopped me from looking around and waiting on it, helped build my confidence. The main thing though was while I thought rapping was the coolest thing for me to do, I started to take a look at other people that were further along y’know like local famous people even actual famous people. Asks questions like how old are they, when did they start. Who’s the oldest person that does what I want to do. How much money do they make compared to others in a similar field (Entertainment). Give yourself a glimpse of what this all leads to. That way you can start to navigate in the right direction.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Life. Though I don’t know that I can say it’s only a challenge. There are a lot of great things in life. But that’s the challenge I think most of us deal with. We’re all trying to navigate everyday life while also trying to align with “The Life” that we actually want. Once I realized that everyone has to go through the ups and downs of life, I stopped taking it personal. Stopped thinking there was somebody out to get me. Everyone goes through it (yeah, some more than others) you don’t have any control over that. You have all the power over what you’re going to do about it.
