We were lucky to catch up with MJ CALLEJAS recently and have shared our conversation below.
MJ, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from a simple, yet powerful truth: no one can do anything for me if I don’t try first. It’s a principle that has become my compass, especially in times when everything seems difficult. It’s believing that as long as I keep trying, there’s always a chance to get ahead, to learn, to improve. And in that determination, I find strength to keep moving forward, even when the road seems endless.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have a great influence on my work from graphic design, a profession that I practiced since before computers arrived in this activity. My work as a pop art artist has allowed me to feed my creativity to venture into various niches besides artwork. Murals, objects and clothing are part of my catalogue. This year I have the project of publishing a book that allows my journalistic side to leave a testimony of what my professional evolution has meant from the time when I worked with paper, pencil and rulers until the appearance of the technologies that we handle today and the earthquake that is coming with the name of artificial intelligence. I am also preparing a series of artworks related to the theme of the book.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Interestingly, the activities I do today are the same ones I was passionate about in my youth. The tools have evolved, yes, but in essence, I continue to do the same thing even now, in my retirement stage. Perhaps this experience can serve as an inspiration for those who are just beginning their professional life: there is something powerful in consistency. Persisting in an activity or project, without jumping from one thing to another, allows you to build a solid foundation, master skills, and eventually find satisfaction in what you do. The key is not to constantly change direction, but to deepen and grow in the path you have chosen.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who loves pop art. I have products of different price points and it makes me very happy when someone falls in love with one of my objects. In the last year, I have had a good number of murals and I plan to venture into the reconstruction of old furniture in the new year.
