Monique, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Overcoming obstacles and boundaries can be a challenging journey, especially when faced with the additional burden of not being liked by others. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the three remarkable qualities that have shaped and defined who I am today. Firstly, my unwavering determination to never give up has been a driving force behind my accomplishments in the face of challenges and setbacks I persistently push forward, refusing to let obstacles hinder my progress. This resilience has allowed me to overcome, adversity and achieve my goals.

Secondly, I aspire to be remembered for doing great and unique things. I strive to leave a lasting impact through my work, whether it be designing gowns, curating luxury, weddings, or supporting fellow artist by constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation. I am able to create experiences and pieces that are truly memorable and distinctive.

Lastly, I find immense fulfillment in helping other artists, create and mold themselves, I believe in the power of collaboration, and supporting one another’s growth by providing a platform for fellow artists to showcase their talents, and offering guidance and mentorship, I contribute to the development and success of the artistic community as a whole.

The best advice I can give for anyone who is just starting their journey is that In the pursuit of your dreams, failure is often and inevitable part of the journey. However, it is crucial to remember that failure does not define us or our potential for success. Instead, it serves as a valuable teacher, offering lessons and insights that propel us forward. It is during these moments of setbacks that our determination and resilience are truly tested. It is in these moments that we must find the strength to rise again, dust ourselves off and to continue pursuing our dreams with unwavering passion, for it is through perseverance and unwavering belief in ourselves, that we can overcome any obstacle and ultimately achieve the success we desire.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I would say, my current challenge has been imposter syndrome, and if you’re an artist like me, you know exactly what imposter syndrome is. Dealing with imposter syndrome can be a challenging an overwhelming experience, but there are strategies that can help you overcome and navigate through imposter syndrome;

First recognize and acknowledge, your feelings, understanding that it is a common phenomenon, and that many successful individuals have faced, similar doubts, and insecurities. Second imposter syndrome, often stems from negative self talk and self-doubt challenge. These thoughts by questioning their validity and replacing them with positive affirmations, reminding yourself of all your accomplishments, skills and the hard work you have put in to reach where you are. Seek support and share your feelings by reaching out to trusted friends, family or mentors who can provide support and perspective. Focus on your strengths and achievements, making a list of them help to reflect the challenges you have had to overcome and the positive impact you have made. Embrace the continuous learning path that you face on a daily basis imposter syndrome often arises from the fear of being exposed as a fraud. Instead of fearing failure, embrace it as an opportunity for growth and learning. Remember that everyone makes mistakes and faces setbacks and it does not diminish your worth or abilities. Overcoming imposter syndrome is a journey that all artist have to take and it takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and trust in your abilities.
