We were lucky to catch up with Monroe Cline recently and have shared our conversation below.
Monroe, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I feel that life is way, WAY too short and precious to be negative. Easier said than done, but I think happiness is a choice. If you can wake up each morning and choose to be optimistic, you’re already winning. And optimism is contagious! Your vibe attracts your tribe.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In one word, I am a storyteller. Performing and connecting with other humans via my dance and acting work brings me so much joy, and I hope to do it for the rest of my life. I love getting to own my individuality through how I approach particular roles or dance pieces. I also stay creative through directing others as a choreographer and movement director. I find it so much fun to be behind the camera and thrive in the process of creating a finished product from start to finish!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Definitely consistency. You can have the most talent in the world, but if you don’t continue to stay in the game and hone your craft, there will be others that will. Also: be kind! Sometimes just being a decent human being and asking someone how their day was can make all the difference.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, first I just focus on my breath. Deep breathes and counting put me in the moment and out of a hectic headspace. Then I will usually ask myself: will this problem or set of stressful situations affecting me right now matter in a month? A year? Usually the answer is no, and this reminds me that “it’s not that deep.” Life is too short and full of wonderful things to let unnecessary worries drag you down. Again: easier said than done! This is a constant practice that I’m still working on.
