We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Bender. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Hi Morgan , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I feel like imposter syndrome is a very real battle for lots of creatives. When I’m feeling down on myself, my talent, or comparing myself, or my work to others I remind myself to look back at where I started. I look back at the cringy 2009 senior pictures I took of my first clients and remind myself that I’m continually growing. I believe it’s not a bad thing to be inspired or to be looking at where you see yourself growing, but do not constantly compare.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Sanford NC based wedding photographer and videographer. I describe myself as a ninja wedding creative. Being a hybrid shooter and having the ability to capture both video and photo at the same time is really fun for me. Not only do I really enjoy the creative process of documenting your love story unfold, but I really love the bond that my clients and I form. I always want them to feel fully supported throughout the entire process. Something new that is in the works is brand merch, and Styled shoot dress rentals!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Hustle. I was always working multiple customer service jobs while in college, and really learned then, the reality of hustle.
Joyful. I have a heart for making people’s day better with a smile, you never know what someone might be going through.
Camera knowledge. I started my darkroom/dslr journey back in 2009, and I never stopped learning. I still am educating myself, and seeking mentorship to always stay refreshed. Never stop learning.
Networking and making friends in the industry is my number one piece of advice to stay motivated, accountable, and to lean on others who have knowledge to share. acountable
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being a mother of two wild toddlers, and a husband who is gone a lot for work I have learned the hard way how truly important is to take care of yourself. I carve out one day a week to hang with friends and play golf. But really it’s in the daily little mundane tasks that I have to make my life a little easier and to make sure I’m working smarter, not harder. Simple things like getting my coffee set so all I need to do is press a button in the morning and things like that make a huge difference in me getting ready to have a great day.
Business wise I find that writing things down and prioritizing things that need to get done helps me stay on track and not be overwhelmed by client work or deadlines.
