Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ms. Jay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ms. Jay, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
As a black woman navigating the science field and dance world, overcoming imposter syndrome can be a daunting task. It often feels like I have to constantly prove my worth and capabilities in these spaces, which can trigger feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy. To combat these negative thoughts, I remind myself of my accomplishments and the unique perspective I bring to both fields.
One of the ways I tackle imposter syndrome is by surrounding myself with a supportive network of mentors, colleagues, and friends who uplift and validate my experiences. Their encouragement and belief in my abilities help me push through moments of self-doubt and remind me that I belong in these spaces.
Managing a dual career as a black woman in science and dance can be overwhelming at times. Balancing the demands of both fields while also dealing with the pressures of imposter syndrome can be draining. To cope, I prioritize self-care and set boundaries to prevent burnout. Taking time for myself, seeking support from loved ones, and practicing mindfulness techniques are crucial in maintaining my mental and emotional well-being.
Ultimately, embracing my identity as a black woman in these fields and celebrating the intersection of my passions is empowering. By recognizing my worth and value, I can navigate imposter syndrome with resilience and confidence, knowing that I have a unique perspective to offer in both the science and dance worlds.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hello readers! I am a laboratory scientist who has a passion for both helping to diagnose diseases and creating life. Working in fertility and hospital laboratories allows me to use my skills to make a difference in people’s lives every day. One of the most exciting aspects of my work is being able to play a role in helping couples start a family or diagnosing illnesses that can lead to life-saving treatment.
In addition to my work in the lab, I am also a dance studio owner. Leading dance, acro tumbling, and competition dance team programs brings me so much joy and fulfillment. As a competition judge and master class teacher, I am able to share my love for dance with others and help them reach their full potential.
Recently, I have also opened a non-profit organization, The Sanders Fund to provide financial aid to dancers in need. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their passion for dance, regardless of their financial situation. This new endeavor is something that I am incredibly proud of and I am excited to see the impact it will have on the dance community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I believe that three qualities that have been most impactful in my success are resilience, perseverance, and organization.
Resilience has been key in overcoming challenges and setbacks in both my career as a laboratory scientist and as a dance studio owner. Being able to bounce back from failures and keep moving forward has been crucial in achieving my goals.
Perseverance has been essential in staying focused on my long-term objectives and not giving up when faced with obstacles. Whether in the lab or in the dance studio, perseverance has allowed me to push through difficult times and come out stronger on the other side.
Organization has been vital in managing my time effectively, juggling multiple responsibilities, and keeping everything running smoothly. Staying organized has helped me stay on top of deadlines, appointments, and tasks, allowing me to be more efficient and productive in both my professional and personal life.
For those who are early in their journey, my advice would be to focus on developing and improving these qualities. Cultivating resilience will help you navigate the inevitable challenges that come your way. Perseverance will keep you motivated and determined to reach your goals, even when the going gets tough. And staying organized will help you stay on track and make the most of your time and resources. By honing these skills, you will be better equipped to overcome obstacles, stay focused on your objectives, and ultimately achieve success in your chosen path.
How would you describe your ideal client?
In my role as a dance studio owner, I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where individuals of all backgrounds and abilities can thrive. I am dedicated to supporting African American dancers, students with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community in pursuing their passion for dance and reaching their full potential.
For me, an ideal client is someone who values diversity, inclusivity, and equality, and who is seeking a dance education program with these attributes for their childs’ dance journey. I am dedicated to providing personalized and passion driven dance education, and I am passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of those from underrepresented communities.
