Meet Mykel Hawke

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mykel Hawke. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mykel below.

Hi Mykel, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I did not grow up with a very positive life experience from my parents or our poverty, which was profound at times. With mostly negative comments as the primary communication, it’s easy for a kid to have low self esteem.
As a teen I didn’t have a firm understanding of things, but I knew the only way to build confidence was to try to do those things I thought would be positive but difficult. If I failed, it wouldn’t be for lack of trying. And if I didn’t fail, I would find a new, harder goal to overcome. I didn’t have any high school, so I set a goal for a college degree. It took me 8 years for a 4 year degree. but I earned it. I didn’t think I could become a Green Beret, but I believed in it, tried, and made it. So continually challenging yourself with new, harder, higher goals, even though you mail fail them, is how you build your self esteem- by accomplishments, no matter how big or small. And by not being afraid to fail, you try more, and do more, and that builds confidence.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Intelligence. No matter how smart we think we are, there is so much to learn, the quest for knowledge should never end.

Compassion.
No matter who we are, we all share the same emotions, crossing that bridge is what builds real bonds.

Tenacity.
For every wisdom I gain on a thing, I failed at it 10 times first. Don’t fear failure, let it fuel you like a rocket.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
For me, the person who has helped me most would be my partner, my friend, my wife. I had the work ethics, the motivation and the capabilities, but she helped me understand things through the eyes, ears, hearts and minds of others, and that, has made all the difference. Whether it’s work, play, life or love, find good partners, as it’s always the people, more than anything else, that makes determines success.
