Meet MyKenzie Mathis

We were lucky to catch up with MyKenzie Mathis recently and have shared our conversation below.

MyKenzie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I would say that my purpose is to bring joy, connection and memories to others that I come across throughout life. Not only do I serve my clients but I also serve other creatives in the industry. I believe that we go through the things that we go through in order to help others get through the same or similar situations during our lifetime. If I cross paths with you throughout my lifetime, I want to ensure that I either made you feel something or educated you on something.
I found my purpose through The Lord and my work over the years. When I started my photography business, I had no idea just how much God was going to change my life with it. This started for me as just a hobby, but it quickly became so much more. Once I leaned into His plan for me to be a full time entrepreneur everything just kind of fell into place. I started with capturing memories and now I am also able to help educate other photographers on how to do the same. My purpose is something that I don’t take lightly and I am so grateful to God for showing me the way!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a traveling photographer who specializes in couples and wedding photography. I am also a business coach and mentor for aspiring photographers. I think for me the most exciting part of my job would be that I am able to meet and grow with so many different people! To not only be able to capture memories for my couples but to also be able to watch my mentees grow so much over the years is the most surreal and honorable thing for me. I have lots in store over the next year for all of the people in my community!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three things that have been most impactful in my journey would be: 1. Becoming friends with failure – I’ve found that as a creative entrepreneur who can feel personally attached to my work and my goals, it’s really easy to despise “failure” and avoid it at all costs. But in reality, it can be detrimental to growth!
2. Persistence – Part of what makes an entrepreneur successful is their willingness to learn from mistakes, continue to ask questions and persist until they reach their goals!
3. Adaptability – The nature of business is ever changing and as an entrepreneur you must be adaptable to the new challenges and opportunities that present themselves.
I highly advise those just starting out to find a mentor who can be honest with you and push you to constantly be your best self in all aspects of life to ensure you’re doing so with your business as well!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
It is so easy to get overwhelmed when running your own business so here are a few things that I have implemented myself over the years to help prevent that: – Strict business hours // find what works for you and stick to it! This one will save your sanity.
– Scheduled time off // just like you schedule your work hours, you need to schedule time to LIVE YOUR LIFE.
– Dump lists // I swear by dump lists. Choose a day every week that you sit down and write all that you need to get done that week down then get on it!! ONLY tackle one thing on your list at a time.
– Outsource // You can’t possibly do it all. Find your weak spots and outsource them to a professional to save time and your mental!
