We were lucky to catch up with Nasir Kenneth Ferebee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nasir Kenneth, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose when I was in my third semester at Delaware County Community College which is in the suburbs of Philadelphia. At that point, I only knew that one day I wanted to live in Los Angeles and work in the entertainment industry, but I wasn’t sure of how that would come into fruition.
My professor was writing and directing a film and I volunteered to work as a production assistant.
When I stepped on a film set for the first time, I felt at home. It was the first time in my life where I felt like I was naturally excellent at something. After that, I transferred to Temple University studied Film & Media Arts and an intern at the Philadelphia Film Office. My career continued to progress from there as I went from intern to producer.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a producer, I love to build projects from the ground up. Taking a project from script to screen or from pitch deck to screen is extremely rewarding. What I also find most rewarding is managing diverse and inclusive crews while getting a chance to develop their talent. I currently have a bunch of projects in development that will hopefully be out next year. Recently, I produced a Hulu Giving Flowers campaign for Black History Month as well as an activation for the Independent Spirit Awards. I’m really proud of both of those projects.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important skills that I’ve attained while working in this industry as a television and film producer is persistence, discipline, and patience. This business is definitely a triathlon, and it’s important to find new and innovative ways to stay in the race. For anyone that is starting on their journey, I would highly recommend that they focus on training, building their technique, and being mindful of their specific purpose.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography by Sidney Poitier is a book that has been incredibly impactful to me. Mr. Poitier was such a distinguished pioneer in the entertainment industry and having him as a phenomenal example and his book as a blueprint has been life changing. His confidence, tenacity, and determination and what he accomplished during the time that he did is unmatched.
