Meet Natalia Gonzalez Hernandez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natalia Gonzalez Hernandez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natalia below.

Natalia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I endured and survived physical, sexual, emotional, economic, psychological, and technological abuse from a domestic partner. The process of becoming a lawful permanent resident, a financially independent single mother of 1 (at the time) and of healing from an abusive relationship, took a huge toll on both my physical and mental health. But 12 years later, I can proudly say that not only did I achieve to survive it myself, but that I am now in a position that may inspire other women to do the same for themselves.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, but have been a proud Houstonian for the past 12 years. In addition to working for an American multinational IT services and consulting company, and teaching Zumba classes at my local LA Fitness, I am the Head Instructor of the Women Empowered Program at Gracie Jiu Jitsu Houston.

Women Empowered is the official Gracie self-defense program for women based on the techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that addresses the 20 most common attack strategies that a male assailant is likely to use on a woman. From hair-grabs and choke-holds, to bear hugs and weapon defenses, the Women Empowered® program covers it all.

Unlike most self-defense systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, and coordination, the techniques in the Women Empowered program employ leverage, technique, and timing, so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can make them work against larger opponents.

And beyond the physical techniques, Women Empowered® also reinforces awareness principles, risk assessment, and verbal and psychological strategies a woman can use to set safe boundaries with others – even if the perpetrator is someone she knows.

At the core of this mindset is the belief that WE are worth defending!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The kindness of people, a strong determination to provide for my children, and a positive mindset were my best allies along the way.

In the journey of life, your path may become challenging, but remember this:

1. Within you resides an incredible ability to adapt and overcome. Embrace the strength within you, for it is boundless.
2. You are not alone. There is strength in unity, and a supportive community can make the burdens feel lighter. Reach out and let others in.
3. In the midst of your responsibilities, don’t forget to nurture your own spirit. Your well-being is a priority, not a luxury.
4. Every day is a new opportunity to cultivate a positive mindset. Celebrate your victories, no matter how small, and let them propel you forward. You are not defined by your challenges; you are defined by your resilience in the face of them.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Not “who” but “what”. Jiu Jitsu, specifically Gracie Jiu Jitsu, has completely transformed my life! I cannot stress enough how incredibly empowering and therapeutic it has been for me. It has helped me heal at a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level; it has blessed me with an incredible community of like minded people who inspire me to become a better person, and it has given me extraordinary role models to look up to.
