Meet Natalie Deering

We recently connected with Natalie Deering and have shared our conversation below.

Natalie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
When it came to creating my wellness podcast, it didn’t happen overnight. I eagerly hired a podcasting coach, bought all of the podcasting materials, only to not use the coach’s services or even open the boxes of podcasting goodies for over a year after purchasing. There were parts of me that said “I”m not good enough” and “I’m not supposed to do podcasting”. These thoughts came from parts of me that were trying to protect me from feeling invalidated, disappointed, and shamed. I spent over a year turning towards these parts of myself with curiosity and compassion with the help of wonderful healers and guides in the IFS community. It was through this work of turning towards these parts with a loving energy instead of an energy of rejection, that I actually came to an understanding of their positive intention and what they were trying to protect me from deep within. Imposter syndrome is not a syndrome but it’s a phenomenon. It is not something to challenge or ignore, it is something to turn towards with curiosity. It is there based on your background and messages you received either directly or indirectly regarding your capabilities. Get to know these parts of yourselves so that you can then heal the burdened beliefs holding you back!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a licensed mental health therapist and podcast host. I specialize in using internal family systems therapy, meditation, and restorative yoga to invite self-awareness and healing. I provide mental health therapy within my private practice, ND Wellness Psychological Services, and I also host the IFS informed wellness podcast called, That Wellness Podcast with Natalie Deering: Internal Family Systems with a Twist. My mission for the podcast is to invite listeners to hear from various experts within the vast field of wellness. It can feel overwhelming when turning towards wellness as a whole, so I invite people with different backgrounds and specialities to come on a share so that listeners leave feeling as though they’ve learned something new, something they may have never heard of before. I provide guided meditations, interesting interviews, and personal chats within the podcast. It is there as a free resource from me to you. It can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, and more. Happy Listening!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that were most impactful in my journey have been curiosity, courage, and compassion. When the parts of us that are afraid are willing to soften and give space, then curiosity is able to be accessed. Fear cannot live in the same space as curiosity. When we’re curious, we lean in, we turn towards, we face what we’re interested in with a sense of calmness and willingness to learn. Same thing with courage, when the parts of us that are afraid are understood and appreciated, we have more spaciousness to access courage. The courage to take the first steps towards something we’re curious about. For me, it was the courage to hire the podcasting coach and buy the podcasting materials. Then it was the courage to turn towards the parts of me that said I wasn’t good enough to do host a podcast. Then it was the courage to record my first episode and schedule people to interview. Compassion is what is present within us when there is forgiveness, understanding, and appreciation. I felt this towards my parts that told me I wasn’t good enough to host a podcast. I let them know that I loved them no matter what they said and that I was here to help them not have to carry that burdened belief anymore. It’s having compassion for all of me, for the people I interview, and towards the listeners. When you access the qualities of curiosity, courage, and compassion, you got this!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am looking to connect with individuals within the wellness field. I know that the field of wellness is vast, so I am open to anyone who has something to share that they feel is important for others to know, such as healing resources, interesting research, personal stories of struggle and growth, etc. I would love to connect with you so that potentially you can share your story and resources on the podcast. Please email me directly as ndwellness.services@therapysecure.com.
