We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Natalie Nishoka a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Natalie, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
When the pandemic hit, I had just graduated from college and struggled to find a job. So, I decided to explore my passion for landscape photography and turn it into a business. It wasn’t easy at first, but I gained self-confidence as I learned how to sell and price my products. I realized I shouldn’t compare myself to other vendors but instead focus on my unique skills.
It’s important to understand that you are unique, and no one else can produce the same products as you do. Therefore, being courageous and confident is crucial when pricing your products according to their true value. Confidence in your abilities is essential for boosting your self-esteem, and it’s something that only you can do for yourself. The key to success is to believe in yourself and your abilities.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Aloha, my name is Natalie Nishioka, and I am the CEO of Nataliearth Photography. I established this business in 2021 to create art that fills empty spaces and reminds us to be present in the existing moments, overcome our fears, and lead a mindful lifestyle for the planet we love. I was born and raised in Hawaiʻi and grew up surrounded by the beauty of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Through my passion for photography, I capture incredible artistic and extraordinary moments that reflect the essence of our earth. Despite being a self-taught photographer, I am also a freediver, spearfisher, surfer, and avid hiker. As I look ahead to the upcoming year, I am most excited about achieving profitable growth for my business as a full-time artist and positively impacting my brand by creating a community around creativity and the environment through my photography.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Throughout my journey, I’ve found three things to be important: being open to new ideas, learning from my mistakes, and communicating well with my customers. Being open-minded has allowed me to try new things, which has helped me grow my business. I’ve learned a lot from my challenges, which has helped me make better decisions. When selling my work, communicating effectively with my customers is key. I am authentic, welcoming them with a friendly attitude and positive energy. These qualities have helped me a lot along the way in my photography business.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I found a book that I found helpful in my personal growth journey – “You Are a Badass Everyday” by Jen Sincero. This book taught me how to believe in myself and be more confident. What’s great about it is that it helps you to identify and change negative thoughts and behaviors that hold you back from reaching your goals. You’ll also learn how to overcome your fears and take risks, make money, and, more importantly, love yourself and others. The book will inspire you to dream big and give you practical tips to achieve them. In short, it will teach you how to create a life you truly love, starting right now.
