Meet Nate Hicks

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nate Hicks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nate below.

Nate, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from knowing that I have purpose and that my God given gifts have made and will make room for me. When life gets tough or even just mundane, (whether briefly or for an extended period of time) opportunity always presents itself for me to learn new things, create excitement through my art and performance, add to my portfolio, inspire others and make a difference.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a creative! I create music and experiences that are true to me and that also keeps the guest/listener in mind. The journey is the most exciting and special part because as much as I feel like I’ve discovered myself and my gifts, more layers are continuously being uncovered and a lot of it is due to the fact that my listeners and supporters are real, raw, and honest with me.
I began releasing music via Facebook, Soundcloud, and YouTube in 2016 and over the years I’m blessed to notice the growth. In the midst of taking on other aspects of music (business) and creativity (i.e. curating shows, orchestrating and fulfilling merchandise, teaching, finding time to practice and learn my instrument(s) of choice, etc.), it is my current goal and focus to stop waiting on the “perfect time” and to let go of all pressure and expectation of perfectionism. It’s time to release all the music that’s just sitting on a computer, produce the music that has been in my head for years, and make space to receive and create new music.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Some of the greatest men and women that I know and learn from are examples of what it means to adapt and let go (Move forward), invest (Sacrifice), and maintain peace (Be still AND know). These are all principles that I’m still learning how to consistently and effectively apply. Some people, places, or things are present in your life to distract you. Some have served a purpose that you once needed, but no longer need so space is being taken up. Some decisions that you’ve made have left you full of regret and with consequences to carry. If these people, places, or things are not aiding you to get to where you want and need to be, adapt and let go.
A lot of resources are natural and a lot are man-made. Some, we possess from birth and some, we acquire along the way. One that we all possess is (limited) time. What you choose to do with yours is on you. I truly understand now what it means when it is said that nothing in life is free. If you want to have something, you have to give something to get it. Question what it is you want, why it is that you want it, what the cost of said thing is. Figure out if it’s still worth it to you, and invest accordingly.
Change is constant, nothing is forever. Though it’s okay to be honest with yourself and others about how you feel, allow nothing to steal your inner peace. You deserve to sleep well at night knowing that you will make it through whatever it is you’re going through. Have faith. Stay grounded. Stand firm. Be still and KNOW!

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason is a recent read whose wisdom will stay with me forever. I recommend everyone to read it at least once.

The 7 simple rules of money:
1) Start thy purse to fattening.
2) Control thy expenditures.
3) Make thy gold multiply.
4) Guard thy treasures from loss.
5) Make of thy dwelling a profitable investment.
6) Ensure a future income.
7) Increase thy ability to earn.
