Meet Nathan Nowak

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nathan Nowak. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Nathan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
The purpose of our small business ended up finding us. We started because we wanted to create live edge tables out of some local trees that we came across. Little did we know that would turn into a business for us. As time went on and we invested in better equipment and the Kansas City area began to learn about how we could repurpose their trees into useable lumber, our business grew into what it is today. Now more than ever our services are needed across KC, we have helped countless customers find the best and highest use for there timber and have kept thousands of board feet of useable trees out of landfills. It’s a win for everyone including the environment.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Here at Wyco Wood Co. we provide the service of mobile lumber milling to the residents of Kansas City. Our services are unique because we bring the sawmill to your location and mill your trees onsite. Mobile saw milling is beneficial in many ways. We eliminate the need for our customers to transport their large heavy logs to a sawmill to get processed into lumber. We have also discovered that tree removal services usually charge the customer less if they do not have to remove the largest (trunk) of the tree when they can leave it for us to mill. We also reduce or eliminate the need for our customers to go buy lumber for their projects while using a resource that they already own.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The qualities that have helped us succeed so far have been hard work, perseverance and stubbornness. I do not like to fail at anything I choose to do and starting this business is no exception. There have been may jobs that have been incredibly difficult from the beginning. We have milled lumber in locations no other mill can access, on hillsides, in the mud, heat, snow, rain, pushing our equipment and resolve to its breaking point. We tackle jobs no one else has the desire or ability to complete and do it because it’s worth the challenge. We do this because we love the victory of a completed job and the difficult ones are the most rewarding. My advice for anyone on their small business journey is to love what you do, that makes the difficult times more manageable.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are always looking for partners in our small business journey. Tree services that want to donate logs, woodworkers that need lumber for their projects and homeowners that want to repurpose their trees into lumber are needed for our business to continue. We are also looking for custom home builders that are looking to add that “wow” factor for their clients by milling them custom lumber pieces that they can’t get anywhere else.
