Meet Nejra Jerlagic

We recently connected with Nejra Jerlagic and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nejra, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
This is definitely something I am still working on. We are all very different and special. On a bad say, I like to remind myself that even my heroes feel like this sometimes. I mean Taylor Swift, who is one of the biggest performers in the world has a whole song where she calls herself “Anti-Hero”. We all have these thoughts and that the only way to push through is to focus on individual growth and the art you’re making.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a person who is in love with music. I always knew I wanted to create, but it wasn’t always an option. I had moments where I studied what I disliked, when I worked in a field that I didn’t want to work in. But at the end of those long exhausting days I’d come home and write about it all. That was a sign that making music and performing is something I was meant to do. I decided to put my whole heart in it and release my first EP called When Sweet Things Become Bitter. It is a concept EP, a love story from its sweet beginning to its bitter end. It is available on all streaming services. Give it a listen.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As a singer-songwriter, I think the most useful qualities are creativity, perserverance and networking. When it comes to creativity, listen to your own heart and if you get stuck, allow yourself to take a moment away from your work. It is amazing what a simple relaxing walk can do for your brain. Let’s say you have a whole project, now it’s time to release your music. The music industry can be very competitive, so do not let anyone discourage you. There is enough space for us all. Just keep pushing through. Finally, what’s also very important is connecting with people, sharing your work and meeting potential coworkers. I’d say take advantage of the times we live in, social media can be so useful when it comes to networking. I met many talented people just by connecting with them on Instagram.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book that helped me a lot with understanding music industry is All You Need to Know About the Music Business. There is a reason they call it The Music Industry Bible. I would just like to point out that if you are going to read it, get the newest edition, since it explains a lot about how social media can be of help.
