We were lucky to catch up with Nelson Estevez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Nelson with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethics at the core, derives from my parents. They moved from the Dominican Republic in the early 70’s as teenagers to New York City barely knowing English to provide a better opportunity for themselves and their loved ones. I can only imagine the culture shock and how they had to adapt while learning a new way of life. They have also been honest, hardworking individuals who always set the bar for me and my sibling.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an actor/film maker based in Los Angeles, CA by way of New York City. What is special and exciting about this occupation is that one has the opportunity to connect with individuals from many walks of life. Whether is performing in front of the camera or executing behind the camera, this opportunity is always present. You can currently watch me on Tuesday nights 9pm/8c on Tyler Perry’s The Oval on BET.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. I am grateful for my business degree. I figured that transitioning from Sales, Marketing, sectors to The Arts would have been a significant transition of change but in actuality has assisted in the Business of Entertainment.
2. The more I am true and honest to myself (knowing self) the more it reflects the growth and progress in my career.
3. This business is a marathon, not a race. Take the time to prepare yourself, learn the craft, the business and live life in abundance.
The advice I would have for folks is to enjoy the journey. Everything will start making sense along your path of life.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to instill an honest, diligent work ethic while embracing me with unconditional love.
