We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicholas Nguyen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I don’t think I’ll ever overcome imposter syndrome. I feel like no matter who you are, you will have imposter syndrome, but at the same time it’s something that makes you work harder because you want to achieve more.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a photographer and content creator that loves to simply shoot beautiful images. One thing that’s special about taking photos of others is that you have the ability to make someone feel a certain way through your style, craft, and camera. I love taking portraits and love lighting in general. I hope to one day be able to shoot advertisement for brands and have my work on billboards or somewhere thousands of people will see.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The ability to take criticism, self acknowledgment, and the willingness to learn. These are the three things that I believe allowed me to get to where I am today. If you are just starting out, consume as much content in whatever field you are in and put it into practice. There’s no better way to learn than making mistakes, but at the same time you have to consume material to put into practice. Also don’t be afraid to mess up and take pride in the flaws in your work because they are what make you the photographer/creative you are.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My mentor, Thanin, has been the key factor in my photography journey. Having a mentor has honestly jumpstarted the learning curve and basically allowed me to learn from mistakes without making them.
