Meet Nicole Grasty

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nicole Grasty. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Nicole, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Growing up as an only child I would constantly be around my parents. They are the ones that really set the example and shaped my work ethic today. We didn’t grow up with money, so my parents worked extremely hard to make a better life for themselves and create more opportunities for me. I saw my mother work a full time job and still make time to get her undergrad and masters degree. Some days I would go to work with my dad at 4 in the morning, get off at 3, then go paint my grandparents’ house.
I contribute my work ethic to them because they set the standard and made sure to hold me accountable.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Wardrobe Stylist. Have been for over 6 years now. I’ve never doubted that I am meant to work in fashion. It has been a self expression and an outlet for me since I was younger. Which then lead me to getting a degree in Fashion Merchandising at Virginia Commonwealth University. After a few internships in different areas of fashion, I stumbled into styling knew this was my calling. Now I get to curate looks and styles for many different people, artist and brands. I just love how everyday isn’t the same and there something new to experience. Although I do all types of wardrobe styling, I specialize in more streetwear and menswear.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learning how to problem solve, paying attention to the details, and staying organized. Advise I would give is to take in each experience. This is always going to be the quickest way to learn. Ask whomever you are working with for feedback of your performance after a project, and take it into account for next time.

I am still learning new or better ways to do things each time I am on set or a new project.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Finding the time to get everything done. Between fittings with clients, going to showrooms, and collaborating with other creatives, it seems is though there is not enough time in the day. Time management has become the most difficult task as I become busier. To help elevate this, I have been mapping out my day the night before. Making a checklist then adding specific times into my google calendar seems to be helping my cause at the moment.
