We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Watson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Overcoming and persisting through the challenges of mental health and substance use disorder has been a profound journey for me. When I embarked on the path of therapy and started addressing these issues, I discovered a remarkable source of strength within myself. Instead of letting my struggles define me, I chose to channel my experiences into something positive.
Creativity became my refuge, and marketing and content creation became the canvas where I painted my resilience. Through the process of self-discovery and healing, I found that expressing my thoughts and emotions through creative endeavors allowed me to connect with others who may be facing similar challenges.
Every piece of content I create is not just a product of my creativity but a testament to my triumph over adversity. It’s a way for me to communicate, educate, and break the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders. Sharing my journey openly has not only empowered me but also created a sense of community with those who understand the struggles firsthand.
Therapy played a crucial role in providing me with the tools to navigate the complexities of my mind. Learning healthy coping mechanisms, building resilience, and developing a support system have been instrumental in my ongoing recovery. It’s a continuous process, but with each step forward, I am rewriting my narrative and proving to myself that I am more than my challenges.
In essence, my journey has become a story of transformation, resilience, and the unwavering belief that, despite the darkness, there is always room for light. Through creativity and connection, I have not only overcome but thrived in the face of adversity, turning my struggles into a source of inspiration and hope for others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three key elements stand out: resilience, adaptability, and a continuous thirst for knowledge. In the face of challenges, resilience kept me moving forward. Adaptability allowed me to navigate uncertainties. The pursuit of knowledge empowered me. To those starting their journey: cultivate resilience, embrace adaptability, and never stop learning. These qualities form the foundation for growth and success, turning challenges into stepping stones toward a fulfilling journey.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Sober Slogans by Jeff Vickers has been a guiding light in my journey. Its simplicity and attractive writing style resonate deeply. The book emphasizes the power of resilience and the importance of embracing life in recovery. One impactful nugget is ‘One Day at a Time,’ a reminder to focus on the present moment. ‘Progress, Not Perfection’ has also been transformative, encouraging a compassionate approach to personal growth. Jeff Vickers’ work has truly shaped my perspective on mental health and recovery.
