We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Noble. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Noble below.
Noble, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I try to keep my creativity alive by immersing myself in things that provoke my sense of wonder. These include attending concerts, listening to music, watching a movie or show that inspires me, and giving myself space to create. Every time I attend a show or concert by someone I admire, it gives me a boost of creativity. Also, instead of just watching reality shows (which I do most of the time), every once in a while I will watch something like Sesame Street, PeeWee’s Playhouse, or a documentary about a particular artist. That gives me another boost of creativity and inspiration. Lastly, I need to make sure I give myself space to sit in silence and create something out of nothing. I am introverted – I need lots of alone time. I find that my alone time gives me the space to have ideas and develop those ideas.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a musician with my hands in lots of different pots; I am focused on building my artistic career in many ways! One of those ways includes creating music and touring with my band Silica Gel. We are going to tour the Northwest in July, playing shows in Portland, Seattle, and Victoria, British Columbia in Canada. I have also been developing a new project called PlayPlace, where I explore improvisation and the inner child through playing children’s toys. Lastly, I am so excited to be working on a new album for my solo project, Noble. I have been recording and collaborating with musicians and artists for the new album entitled “Waiting.” I have also been working on a music video with my friend and filmmaker Myles Cain. This video will be released alongside the single, “Will I?” in June 2023. The video will be available on my Youtube channel and the single will be on Spotify.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say the three things that have helped me grow in my artistic journey are prioritizing my own creativity, engaging in collaboration and community, and saying yes to opportunities that arise. Throughout my life, I have never had a “dream job.” I have worked in many different positions, I have been unemployed for long periods of time, and had to do some soul searching to figure out what I want to do “for money” (I still don’t know). But, throughout every job or period of unemployment, I’ve always known that my art is the most important thing to me. I try to prioritize my art above everything else so that I have the energy to keep moving forward. Also, collaborating with others keeps my creative spirit alive. I have been able to become a part of an artistic community that inspires me every day. Lastly, I think the best skill to have as an artist is to just say yes to opportunities that arise. The more you keep saying yes, taking opportunities, the more those opportunities will build to something that resembles a sustainable artistic career. Putting myself out there, meeting new people, and trying new things musicially has led to so many opportunities that I’m very grateful for!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
In my musical journey now, I have really enjoyed making music for short films. I am looking to collaborate with more filmmakers to create my own musical scores. I have scored a claymation, two short films for the Sidewalk Film Festival “Scramble,” and a few other short films made by friends in my commmunity. I would love to eventually make a career out of scoring, so right now I am trying to take as many opportunitites as I can.
