We recently connected with Noelani Getfield and have shared our conversation below.
Noelani, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Over time, running my business has taught me that without self-care it easy to run out energy. Braiding is an art that takes time. Many times I would go full business days without eating or drinking just because I was in the “zone”. The following days where I would have to wake up in the morning for school I would be completely exhausted. Now that I think about it, the term self-care has always been a foreign term for me. Yet, it is through my business that I learned to start taking more care of myself. It is not all the time that I wake up and have a full breakfast before braiding all day but now I am more cautious. Therefore, one of my forms of self-care is simply making sure that I am eating well; resulting in my ability to have better mornings and better days over all. Another way that I perform self-care is through shopping! Fashion has always been one of my passions ! Simply, going to my favorite in person stores and creating outfits in the dressing rooms calms me and allows me to expand my creativity. On Sundays, I reset through prayer, journaling and meditation so that I am mentally prepared for the week ahead. All of these various forms of self care have brought me peace and tranquility. I am learning to make these acts of self-care my default setting rather than conforming to stress and anxiety.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Noelani Jaide Getfield. I am the owner of Hair by Noelani Jade, a small business located in The Bronx, NY. I started my business when I was 14 years old and it is going 3 and a half years strong. I am also an aspiring creative director and fashion stylist/content creator. For several years of owning a business, I have developed multiple skills such as teamwork, leadership, and patience. My favorite part of being in the fashion and hair field is that they are interconnected. It is beautiful what can happen when you indulge in your passions and what most interests you. I love working with others to develop great productions and services. As I progress to college, I hope to continuously network with other creatives to develop more outstanding bodies of work that will have a positive impact on our society.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that were most impactful throughout my journey would be patience, understanding and resilience. Patience because not everything will happen when you want it to. It is important to learn how to wait because rushed work is never the best work that you can deliver. It is always better to produce a beautiful outcome over time where you are continuously learning rather than putting out poor work in a short amount of time. Understanding, because in almost every field you may find yourself working with other people. In my business, I had to meet my clients where they were. In order to effectively give them the results they wanted, I had to take a step back from what I know to understand what their expectations are. In life, understanding will be crucial in your work, in your relationships and simply for yourself. Resilience because hardship is inevitable. Without hardship, there is little to get through so there is little to fight for. I always look at hardships and ask myself, “What is God trying to teach me here?” and “What am I not seeing” These simple yet deep questions quickly allow me to shift my perspective from something happening to me to what I can learn from this. For those who are early in their journey, experience will bring all of these skills.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for people to create editorial shoots and fashion content with. If you are a photographer, fashion stylist, producer, content creator or a fellow creative director, I would love to collaborate. I think that networking and collaboration is a key aspect of growth. I am open to all ideas and opportunities. The best way to connect with me in terms of collaboration is through my business emails.
