We recently connected with Nojan Rahimian and have shared our conversation below.
Nojan , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
In my opinion, creativity comes to life in moments of flow when my mind is quiet and there is no chatter going on in the background. It requires learning and development to get to that point. Most people can experience moments of stillness accidentally or at random moments and they realize the feeling of contentment and peace from it.
However to achieve that consistently requires developing the skills for it to calm down the monkey mind. The combination of a quiet mind and mastery of a skill or a technique will lead to creative creation. The medium, in my case painting and drawing, becomes a channel to express creativity.
I keep my creativity alive by being in those moments of stillness and staying open to inspiration.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
For a long time, art was a way to express what I couldn’t talk about. It was a safe space for me to love myself. I created art for many years to find myself, comfort myself, and heal myself.
When I put my art out there I had no idea I can get such a rewarding response back from others. The way that people can connect to my art is fascinating! My art became a bridge between their inner selves and their outside world. I am so grateful that what I am doing can help people to realize that their feelings are valid and they are not alone. Even the feelings that are usually frowned upon!
At the moment, I am finishing several collections for showcases that address a wide range of complex human emotions. These paintings and drawings portray concepts about healing, spirituality, and mental health. The feelings that a modern human can face only in the moment of absolute honesty and presence.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think an expressive artist needs a medium to be able to immediately transfer emotions and understandings into existence; as you feel it, you can express it. These understandings can range from knowing how to create forms to recognizing the internal thought process,
To be an expressive painter, developing one’s drawing ability can help immensely. Drawing allows one to transfer feelings and expressions right at that moment of experiencing them onto a blank paper. As one practices more artistic mediums, those fundamental understandings and techniques will reveal a unique style.
Of course, this level of maturity can’t happen without two other qualities which are discipline and patience. I think these three can be very helpful for someone who is becoming an expressive visual artist.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
The most significant area of improvement for me in the past 12 months has been self-awareness. It has been a long journey to be an authentic version of myself. This is an everyday work and I have been receiving back the energy that I put out from the universe as a result of this journey. The reflection of that can be seen in my art in the textures, the subjects, the techniques, and the brushstrokes.
For me, the art and the process of creation are the lights of this path. They brighten this wavy path of self-awareness. Every painting and every drawing is an expression, a conversation with myself, and a step forward in this process.
