Meet Omari Washington

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Omari Washington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Omari, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from not having much growing up. From the early stages of my life I knew my family and I were poor. We would eat the same meal for 5 sometimes 6 days straight. Sometimes we had no power so we would use an extension cord to get power from the hallway outlet. Once I got older I made a promise to myself. The promise was to bless others when I have it because I knew what it felt like to not have anything. Fast forward years later, I still apply that same method to everything I do even acting. For example, I used to host meetup events for actors in LA so they meet other like minded creatives and also receive support from those people as well. I guess you can say God blessed me with a big heart.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an actor/producer in the lovely city of Los Angeles. I moved here 10 years ago from my hometown Chicago to pursue my dream of acting. A lot of my journey has been an uphill battle but so rewarding at the same time. When I first started this journey I hated the process of it all but now I love it because I know it’s making me stronger and a better person. What excites me the most about acting is playing someone else and telling their story.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful on my journey would have to be 1. ALWAYS showing up early to any project I booked helped me eastablish strong relationships in the industry, 2. being prepared at all times helped me execute at a higher level and make good impressions on set and 3. creating a strong online presence helped grow my fan base and reach a wider audience with my talent, which lead to more jobs.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The biggest area of growth for me in the past 12 months is switching my mindset into a more go with the flow type mindset. Growing up I was taught by certain people in my family to have not show any emotion because it’s a sign a weakness, which ultimately lead to a lot of confusion and misplaced anger in my adult life. After going to therapy sessions for about 4 years straight before the pandemic started I realized I needed to change the way I viewed life and also the way I treated the problems in my life. Therapy was so hard in the beginning because of how vulnerable I had to be with a stranger about my truth and backstory. Once I got passed the first few months it wasn’t so bad. I finally felt free from all the trauma I’ve experienced in my life. Going to therapy released a lot of demons from my spirit I never knew were there.
