Meet Oscar Lopez Jr.

We recently connected with Oscar Lopez Jr. and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Oscar, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
The short answer: I haven’t. I’m a music producer / DJ and both of those art forms require an abundance of knowledge in their respective subjects to be proficient. That is especially the case with music production.

All of this is to say, I haven’t fully grasped either art form. I don’t mean that I’m completely inept at making music or DJing. As a matter of fact I produce and independently release my own music and I’ve performed at plenty of shows (big and small) as a DJ. The impostor syndrome stems from knowing that there are people in this industry who are more knowledgeable and talented than I, but were never presented with the opportunities or mild success that I have had.

Not only that, but I also deal with what I’ve heard being referred to as “comparison syndrome.” I don’t compare myself to anyone specifically, but I often see the success of my peers in music and feel that I should be doing more.

At the end of the day it’s all mental. I’m not exactly sure what I can do about these thoughts, but I know that I have to keep moving forward to be successful. So while I may have not overcome these problems yet, I know that if I let them impede me, then I’ll never achieve my goals.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a music producer and DJ from San Diego, California. I go by “Oskier” in the world of electronic music. The genre of music that I make is called “Electro” or “Complextro” which is a sort of a mixture between “Dubstep” and “Progressive House.” I started producing and DJing professionally 8 years ago at the age of 15. Now at 23, I still continue to make music and perform at different events (most recently EDC Mexico 2023).

During the pandemic, I started a series of livestreams titled “Oskier And Friends.” As the name suggests, in these livestreams I along with local DJ friends of mine would perform our individual DJ mixes for a few hours. Since then, we’ve turned “Oskier And Friends” into live and in-person events where international DJs also perform. We organize these events in San Diego as well Tijuana, but we hope we can take them to other cities in the future.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I wish I had a better answer, but the honest truth is that there is no correct way to go about your journey in the music industry. It really is just a matter of trial and error to see what works best for you. I guess the only quality that could help anybody is to be willing to learn always.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely. I’m always looking for gigs or any other opportunities to grow the “Oskier” brand and maybe even expose more people to the sound of “Electro.” I’m also looking for DJs of all electronic genres for future “Oskier And Friends” events.
