We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paige Suzanne a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Paige, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic honestly comes from two main places in my heart – my passion for what I do and for helping others, and my son. I am genuinely so deeply passionate about my career and I am confident that what I do deeply helps others and grows their confidence. I also take my role as a mother very seriously, and I know that my son depends on me to support him in every way, which means I’ve got to work!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In my business, Paige Suzanne Styling, I provide on-site hair and makeup services all over the state of Michigan. My services are available for any and all events, though I do specialize in bridal hair and makeup. I am a licensed cosmetologist and “people professional” as I like to say! I have a talented assistant that I work alongside of to accommodate large parties and/or timing restrictions. I provide airbrush as well as traditional makeup services, hairstyling services, and on-site blow outs! I believe that I am truly anyone’s best choice to hire for hair and makeup because I am genuinely passionate about what I do. I work tirelessly to continue my education, keep up with trends, to communicate promptly, and to show up as the calming, friendly energy that you need. My clients often compliment my calm, professional, confident demeanor, especially on their wedding day! I am a single mother so my business supports myself and my son, therefore I am incredibly grateful for every single client that I have the pleasure of working with.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Confidence! Especially in this industry, it is SO easy to get caught up in the comparison game. Keep your head down and focus on you and your business, not anyone else’s. Comparison is the thief of joy and sometimes even success. Authenticity. SO crucial for a successful business owner in my opinion! Once I stopped trying to show up just how I thought I should, or how I saw other artists showing up, and just showed up as myself, my business really started to take off. Clients can feel when you are not being real or yourself with them, but if you show up confidently as yourself, it will help the client to trust you as well as continue to hire you!
Introspection! This one may sound a little off the wall, but it is also crucial in running a successful business in my opinion. You have to be able to accept constructive criticism, especially in the beauty industry, and allow it to improve you and not discourage you. You have to be willing to recognize when you are lacking in any specific area, when you need to grow, when you need to speed up or slow down, etc. It is so important to be constantly analyzing yourself and the way that you’re running your business in a gentle and productive way!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am looking for licensed cosmetologists in Michigan who have an interest in event hair and makeup and/or the bridal industry to work alongside me! My biggest challenge in my business at this time is the fact that most bridal parties, (I do primarily wedding hair & makeup), are too large for me to provide their services on my own. It can be challenging to find talented, motivated, trust worthy people to work with. I need someone who can prep my clients’ hair and/or skin prior to my application, someone to pass tools and products to me during applications, to disinfect tools for me between clients, and to capture content as I am working. have worked with a few different people and I have found that working alongside me/as my assistant is a great way to determine whether or not the bridal industry/event hair and makeup is for you or not! I also am a very fair person and will always communicate with you to make sure that you feel accommodated and that you’re being treated fairly.
