We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Partice Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Partice below.
Partice, so great to have you sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our readers and so let’s jump right into one of our favorite topics – empathy. We think a lack of empathy is at the heart of so many issues the world is struggling with and so our hope is to contribute to an environment that fosters the development of empathy. Along those lines, we’d love to hear your thoughts around where your empathy comes from?
A couple of personal experiences I’d like to share today. This particular experience was in 2003 when my aunt suffered a stroke, so I moved from North Carolina to Connecticut to help my family with her health care needs. That journey allowed me to develop empathy for caretakers as well as patients who depend on others for activities of daily living skills. I am able to empathize, from both perspectives, the patient and caretaker. I know first-hand it’s a huge sacrifice to care for a loved one. Although, I personally haven’t experienced any serious health challenges, but from my aunt’s perspective I’m sure it took a toll on her having to depend on others for bathing, dressing, and eating, etc. Some days were easier than others, but every day was a blessing. Today that experience allows me to share precious memories and hope for better days to come to anyone in the position of caretaker or a patient.
On another note, my empathy comes from witnessing a dear friend’s cancer journey. Thinking about how Lorraine Little lived her life before she passed away from cancer in 2016. Everyday her faith, strength and courage were so remarkable to me, because from day-to-day while she was on her journey she loved and gave unselfishly to her family and friends. Our 10-year friendship was filled with a lot of partaking in good food, endless laughter, spontaneous trips, and fun-loving debates from movies to sports. Her passion and love for her family was unmatched. Her memory will forever live. A portion of empathy and compassion was emerged in me by spending quality time with Lorraine. Our special sisterhood contain a measure of strength and courage. Her fight to live was exceptional. I am forever grateful to be able to experience a selfless journey.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the Author of the book “Truly Unique I Am Somebody” a Speaker, Life Coach, and Radio Personality. I live in Rocky Mount, NC and graduated from a Historically Black College North Carolina Central University located in Durham, NC where I lived for 10 years after college. I didn’t go to college for Communication although I did consider it, but I Majored in Criminal Justice and minored in Public Administration. Years later God would order my steps to a local radio station where I would have a weekend radio show. I had an interest in learning the technology and business of radio, because I realized this is where I thrive and felt fulfilled. This opportunity led me to hosting concerts and speaking at conferences; I discovered joy in writing and as time would have it, I eventually wrote my first book. I enjoy working as a Radio Host. My radio show went from a weekend show to now a weekly and syndicated show. I know people are listening and going through challenges in their relationships, on the job or possibly dealing mental with challenges. They listen to get through the day, so as a radio personality I enjoy playing inspirational music to make their day feel special or encourage their heart. It does my heart good to hear positive feedback from people enjoying the weekly The Praise Party.
As a radio personality I enjoy traveling and covering special events on the red carpet, especially interviewing popular gospel artist, celebrities and entertainers.
I also volunteer as a Youth Leader in the Teen Ministry in my Church in Raleigh NC. Where I find pleasure in sharing my testimony with the youth, so they can build their foundation to success early.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important area that is most impactful on my journey is being kind to others. I can remember my grandmother offering a helping hand and talking to stranger as she shopped for groceries. We don’t know exactly what people deal with on a daily basis, sometimes meeting people in the store or gas station, etc. you are probably the only one they interact with. With that being said I purposely attempt to take time to be kind or offer a nice gesture. (Even a smile) I discovered being a good listener allow me to ascertain the benefits life has to offer. There is always someone in a worst predicament, so it’s always room to be grateful. One skill to focus on is listening, another one is problem-solving, and the final skill is sense of direction. These three skills help me navigate through challenging days and become better women to live a fruitful life. As I think back to when I learned how to drive there weren’t any GPS gadgets around, so a basic map was it. Back in those days a basic map gave me an opportunity to develop a skill sets that GPS gadgets lack. Those skills gave me the fortitude to be prepared for the inevitable days and take one day at a time. I recommend being intentional and journaling your accomplishments and you’ll develop and improve your skills by practicing every day.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone looking to pinpoint their uniqueness or occasionally feels like the underdog in the crowd. An individual desiring to find joy in everyday routines. An individual who seeks for personal growth or development and willing to step outside of their fears to discover a new journey.
