Meet Peiyang Li

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Peiyang Li. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Peiyang below.

Peiyang, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As a fashion designer and astrologer, I often draw inspiration from my clients’ stories. The astrological chart is like a telescope, allowing me to glimpse the full spectrum of their lives—whether they are students, married individuals, painters, or doctors. Their joys and tears, as well as the psychological journey of their inner moral struggles, are all laid bare. I believe that as a designer, it is crucial to have an open heart. The more inclusive one’s mindset, the more creativity flows. My side profession in astrology is just such a pathway, exposing me to a diverse array of people and experiences. My relationship with clients is multifaceted, sometimes like a friend, sometimes a confidante, and sometimes a mother figure. No matter their mistakes, I am always their safe haven, guiding them without judgment.

Although astrologers and fashion designers may seem worlds apart, both professions convey dreams and concepts through their respective mediums. One relies on intuition and personal insights, while the other uses visual impact.

The most memorable experience that led to one of my collections was a story shared by a client. She showed me a short video about a traditional culture from a small village in Japan called “bone swimming cuisine.” In the video, a restaurant would remove the flesh from captured seafood, leaving only bones and nerves, before the meal was served to guests, allowing the creatures to struggle painfully in a fish tank. The customers did not find this cruel but rather satisfying, as if their subconscious desire for conquest was met. This contrasts ironically with the scene in the film “The Cove,” where the photographer seeking to reveal the truth is denied entry, and dolphins begin to act against their nature by killing villagers.

Coincidentally, both the client and I had a close aspect between Mars and Neptune in our charts. Mars symbolizes plunder, conquest, violence, action, restlessness, and anger, while Neptune represents the ocean and the realm of spiritual consciousness. The bone swimming event is a tug-of-war between spiritual and human desires, as well as moral standards.

I integrated this information and key concepts to begin my artistic creation. In my “Live Sashimi” collection, each dress represents various seafood in the ocean. I researched how to depict the state of injured seafood, initially focusing on color, but it was not novel enough. On my mentor’s advice, I began to experiment with elastic thread, originally used in industrial sewing machines for stretch fit or to add depth to fabrics. When elastic thread is sewn into plump, heavy printed velvet, it’s like a blade slicing through the tender flesh of seafood, appearing calm on the surface but actually pathological and cruel.

In the final stage of the project, I am very grateful to photographer Siqi. Without the collaboration of the entire team, I could not have achieved what I have today. This project, based on a client’s story, eventually won two international awards in fashion design competitions hosted by MUSE and THE BIG SEE. Siqi’s use of light and shadow perfectly presented my imagination of the ocean world and the oppressive feeling of the entire theme.

In summary, as a creative professional with dual roles as a fashion designer and astrologer, I transform the rich emotions and moral conflicts from understanding and empathizing with my clients’ life stories into design inspiration. I firmly believe that an open mindset is the source of creativity, and through the unique path of astrology, I have established multi-level relationships with clients, becoming their supporter and guide. My “Live Sashimi” collection was born under such a philosophy, reflecting a deep awareness of the suffering of marine life and showcasing a profound reflection on human desires and moral challenges through innovative materials and techniques. The success of this project, thanks to teamwork and attention to detail, has won international recognition and awards, proving the power of integrating profound social issues and personal emotions into artistic creation.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a fashion designer and astrologer, my professional journey is a blend of creativity and spiritual intuition. My work is not just about creating beautiful garments; it’s about telling stories and evoking emotions that resonate with the human experience. The most exciting aspect of my career is the ability to transform personal narratives and astrological insights into wearable art. Each piece I design is a conversation starter, a reflection of the wearer’s identity, and a commentary on societal issues.

What makes my brand unique is the fusion of astrology and design. I use astrological charts not only to understand my clients better but also to guide the creative process. This approach allows me to create collections that are deeply personal and meaningful. For instance, my “Live Sashimi” collection was inspired by a client’s story about a controversial Japanese culinary tradition, which I then intertwined with astrological symbolism to address themes of conquest, desire, and moral conflict.

I am particularly proud of the recognition my work has received, including two international awards from MUSE and THE BIG SEE. These accolades not only validate my creative vision but also highlight the power of fashion as a medium for social commentary.

As for what’s new, I am currently exploring ways to make my designs more accessible while maintaining the high-quality craftsmanship that my brand is known for. I am also collaborating with artists from different fields to create a more immersive and multi-sensory experience for my clients. Through these efforts, I aim to continue pushing the boundaries of fashion and design, and to foster a community that values creativity, self-expression, and meaningful dialogue.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey as both an astrologer and a fashion designer, the three most impactful qualities that have shaped my path are a positive mindset, inner resilience, and a strong sense of self-awareness. Embracing and digesting one’s own energy with an optimistic outlook is essential in both fields. Similarly, a strong inner core is necessary to maintain authenticity and originality. It is only when we recognize and assert our unique, irreplaceable selves that others can truly see and appreciate our distinct contributions.

Both professions heavily rely on feedback from others to generate new ideas and content. Therefore, finding the balance between accepting others’ opinions and staying true to oneself is crucial. As a fashion designer, it’s inevitable that not everyone will appreciate my designs, and as an astrologer, not all clients may welcome my insights. When faced with opposition or criticism, it’s vital to keep one’s core stable and undisturbed to ensure high-quality output and remain true to one’s creative vision.

For those aspiring to excel in similar creative industries, my advice is to cultivate a deep understanding of oneself. Understand your strengths, your reactions in different situations, and how you can adapt while staying true to your principles. Developing your own unique style, both in terms of visual presentation and approach to work, is key. Continuously seek feedback, but learn to filter it wisely, allowing it to enrich your practice without compromising your integrity. Remember, the most original and impactful creations often come from a place of self-assurance and clear understanding of who you are and what you stand for.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
