Meet Petra Neiger

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Petra Neiger. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Petra below.

Petra, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
As an ayurvedic practitioner, I look at self-care as a mind, body, soul and sense – care. From taking micro-breaks during the day or giving myself a digital detox to actual getaways and vacations, I carve out a few moments for myself every day. I’m a big fan of micro-breaks.

I usually start and end my day with a short meditation and/or gratitude practice. Then, I follow it with a short morning routine to get ready for the day, which includes tongue scraping and if I have a bit of extra time, oil pulling and self-oleation besides the usual things. That’s a self-care habit I picked up from ayurveda and my morning feels incomplete without it. These practices have been used for thousands of years to help ignite digestion and help you stay balanced.

Exercise has always been a big part of my life and if I can’t squeeze in a workout, at least I try to go for a walk. Just this week, I had a walking meeting with someone, which helped me reset my body as well as my mind. But I make it a point to do some form of physical exercise 4 – 5 times a week.

And sleep. I value my sleep and rest. There are many processes that take place when you’re asleep that cannot happen when you’re awake. A fascinating experiment by the University of Pennsylvania and Washington State University found that the mental and physical performance of participants who slept 6 hours a night for 2 weeks fell to the same level as if they had stayed awake for 48 hours straight, even though they believed that their performance levels were unaffected by the reduced sleep.

I definitely feel more centered when I follow my morning routine, more productive when I get enough sleep, more energized when I exercise, and more creative when I take breaks.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Perseverance, focus and dare to ask.

Perseverance: Building a business takes time, effort and commitment. It will come with a lot of ups and downs. Celebrate successes, however small they may be, and learn from what didn’t work and move on.

Focus: Many people will offer their opinions on your business. Stay focused on your purpose, mission, and assess if these suggestions align with your business. Simultaneously, recognize pivot points that can help move your business forward in a positive way.

Dare to ask: If you don’t ask, the answer will always be “no”. But if you ask, you have a 50% chance of getting a “yes”. Give yourself every opportunity to get a “yes”.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
They taught me resilience.

It’s part of my upbringing and a mindset I’ve cultivated over the decades. My parents and brother are among the few most, if not the most, resilient people I know. Watching them handle life-changing situations have both inspired and taught me to dig deep for faith, trust and hope if I need to, while I keep moving forward. My own life situations have instilled a deep-seated trust in me, and now I know that I’ll bounce back stronger. A big part of it is understanding and accepting that the universe teaches you lessons by giving and by taking away. It’s a cycle. We classify these experiences as good or bad, but they each serve a purpose and come with lessons. It helps when I remind myself of this truth, cultivate hope, trust and gratitude, and do my part to attract a positive outcome. As part of this journey, two big lessons I learned are patience and letting go. Letting go of MY timeline and the specifics of the outcome I wanted.
