We recently connected with Precious Gilbert and have shared our conversation below.
Precious, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
To come to a new city new environment and new goals was challenging. I started taking dance classes at millennium and discovered I could do more than just concert work (ballet) . I got signed to an agency and took off auditioning and getting my name out there. I seen there were no ballerinas that looked like me and realized there’s a lane that I could succeed in and be different. I went through the phase of thinking if I’m not working as a background dancer or with an artist I haven’t “made it” yet. Until I got signed to my dream agency, bloc talent. they wanted to represent me because I was different. I was taking a lot of hip-hop classes thinking I had to do that in order to even get looked at by BLOC not realizing that they want authenticity and I already had what they were looking for. Once I got signed, I started booking and working on jobs that I didn’t even think was possible to book as a technical dancer, it changed my life. I realized who I am as an artist and human. There is no one like you stay in your light even when no one else see it. They haven’t seen it because I didn’t see it in my self first.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am currently focusing on aerial hoop and incorporating that with my commercial dancing.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three skills that were most impactful through my journey is 1. Never take things personal during casting processes because sometimes it’s as simple as fitting a costume. 2. If you train in your field every day and make it a lifestyle you will never fail. 3. Remember to have fun always because if you’re not having fun, then the one judging you for the job or coaching you won’t see your greatness
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My two beautiful girls changed my mental and the way I come at life. They help me to stay in my happy zone as if I was their age because kids don’t worry or stress adults do but it’s by choice and I choose happy
