Meet Puneet Singhal

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Puneet Singhal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Puneet, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
In the journey of effective communication with stammering, the key lies in shifting focus from the traditional model of fluency to the richness of ideas conveyed. Creating environments where speech differences are embraced without judgment is crucial. In such spaces, the emphasis is on the content of communication rather than its delivery, fostering confidence and reducing the disabling impact of stammering. This approach not only empowers individuals to express themselves more freely but also educates others on the value of inclusivity and understanding. The practice of active listening and patience by others plays a significant role, allowing for more empathetic and humane interactions.

For a domestic violence survivor, communication with oneself becomes a powerful tool in the healing process. It involves a compassionate dialogue with the wounded self, acknowledging and understanding one’s emotions and experiences. This internal communication reinforces strength, hope, and resilience, crucial for overcoming trauma. It also includes reflective processing and setting personal boundaries, essential in rebuilding self-worth and agency. Through this journey, one learns that effective communication is not just about fluency but about the depth of connection and understanding, both with others and with oneself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a passionate Social Changemaker, I aim to revolutionize Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) initiatives worldwide. My background—shaped by poverty, domestic violence, stammering and self-diagnosed learning disabilities ( Dyslexia and Dyspraxia) —fuels my desire to champion marginalized individuals’ rights and create balanced representation. I strive to break down barriers for people facing ableism, Body Shaming, Ageism, and more. Advocacy invigorates and empowers me, especially as a member of the disability community.

As the Chief Discovery Officer at Billion Strong, My primary focus is on increasing the “Discoverability” of persons with disabilities, especially those hailing from the Global South. In a world where being seen and heard is not a given for everyone, “Discoverability” is a gift. And it is our highest aim to bestow this gift on as many individuals as possible.

I am committed to amplifying voices, focusing on embracing intersectionality and equity. I believe every story is a mosaic of challenges and triumphs, and I have to foster an environment where all these stories can be told and celebrated.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on the journey of personal and professional growth, especially in the realms of disability inclusion, advocacy, and overcoming personal challenges, three key qualities stand out as particularly impactful: listening with heart, asking questions to deeply understand, and taking actions with empathy.

Listening with Heart: This goes beyond mere hearing. It involves engaging with others with full presence, openness, and compassion. Listening with heart means truly absorbing not just the words but the emotions and experiences behind them. This skill is vital in understanding the nuanced challenges faced by marginalized groups, including those with disabilities. It fosters genuine connections and trust.

Asking Questions to Deeply Understand: The ability to ask thoughtful, probing questions is crucial. It’s not just about seeking answers but about showing genuine interest in the perspectives and experiences of others. This skill helps in gaining deeper insights into complex issues like disability rights and social inclusion. It aids in unraveling layers of experiences that are often overlooked in general discourse.

Taking Actions with Empathy: Empathy drives impactful action. It involves putting oneself in others’ shoes and understanding their needs and challenges. Actions rooted in empathy are more likely to be effective and resonate with those they’re intended to help.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
In my journey of overcoming challenges and developing essential skills and knowledge, Debra Ruh, CEO of Ruh Global and Chair of Billion Strong, has been an instrumental figure. Her role transcends that of a typical boss; she has been a constant support, a mentor, and a cheerleader in the truest sense.

Debra’s approach to mentorship and leadership stands out in several ways. Firstly, her confidence in my abilities has been a crucial factor. She has consistently shown trust in my skills and judgement, which in turn has boosted my self-confidence and encouraged me to take on challenges I might have otherwise hesitated to face. This kind of support, stemming from genuine belief in someone’s potential, is rare and immensely empowering.

Moreover, Debra’s leadership style is characterized by giving space and autonomy. She has never resorted to micromanaging, understanding that true growth comes from allowing individuals to navigate their paths, make decisions, and learn from their experiences. This approach has not only helped in honing my decision-making skills but has also fostered a sense of responsibility and ownership over my work.

Her guidance has been pivotal in helping me develop a balance between seeking advice and being independent. This balance is crucial in any professional setting, as it enables continuous learning while also cultivating leadership and self-reliance.
