We caught up with the brilliant and insightful QPZ a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
QPZ, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I most certainly got them from my parents. Both having served in the military, they were always doing what they can from what little they had and making a difference in their community. Especially my Dad since I have taken some of his leadership qualities to incorporate them into my skillset as a Director. Leading a team or the talent is never an easy task. My job is to bring out the best in people so we can create a beautiful piece of work that will inspire tomorrow’s youth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Music Video Director with Autism based in Seattle & Tacoma, WA. I got my start as a camera operator working a Music Video of a local Seattle Rock Artist named Ayron Jones for his single Take Me Away. This was produced during the pandemic and I had been wanting to switch career paths as I was leaning away from Photography. The Music Video ended up being a success for that artist reaching over 2 million views and gotten praised from Joe Rogan. From that moment on I decided to pursue directing Music Videos. There’s just something about the creativity and freedom of Music Videos that allows me to visualize art and storytelling in a way I wasn’t able to do back when I was photographer. I was always seeing everything happening in motion. That’s what keeps me motivated to create more Music Videos. I happened to be launching a merch line soon alongside having some new Music Video projects in the works with some of the local talent here in Seattle/Tacoma. As well as working with my client, Emanuel Brown we’re very excited to show yall something special soon.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being comfortable saying no to something deep down it’s not the right fit for you. I made those mistakes in the past where instead of saying no it ended up hurting my business from getting from where’s it’s at to where I need to be. That’s something everyone goes through and it takes time to judge what makes the best choice for yourself.
Never give up. This was something that has been testing me for a long time. Last year I was homeless for about 6 months in the Summer of 2023 due to failed relationship with my roommates. Despite my wild situation, I had a friend I knew who was able to let sleep over their roof while I was recovering from my situation while also still directing Music Videos trying to make my career and everyone else’s career happen. Nothing will ever stop me from achieving my goals.
Learning how to make incorporate my ideas as well as the artist’s idea for a music video. In my field Filmmaking, collaboration is one of the key elements to making a successful project. A great example of this was with a recent video I made with my client and good friend Sarey Savy we had been pitching ideas back forth for Lonely ft. Ke’Ante for location, ideas, shots, and time to do this project. We ended up doing two full days of filming due to redoing certain scenes to taking a break from a hot summer weather. It wasn’t easy but I was very satisfied with how it came out and both my clients Sarey & Ke’Ante agreed as well.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I really been looking forward to working with my longtime friend Shayhan, he’s one of the most talented artist I have ever known since 2018. The work he has done with Rae Khalil is amazing. We been waiting to do some artistic visuals for awhile and this year and beyond we both look forward to sharing with all of you some dope stuff.
