We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rachel Arbuckle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rachel below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Rachel with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in the example set by my parents. My dad’s journey from humble beginnings, growing up in a home with limited financial means, to becoming a successful dentist, is nothing short of inspiring. Despite facing challenges, he pursued his dreams with unwavering determination, putting himself through college and dental school. His commitment didn’t stop there; he served in the Navy Medical Corps for 20 years before venturing into private practice. Yet, amidst his professional endeavors, he always made time for our family, coaching soccer and hosting Sunday barbecues, exemplifying the importance of balance and dedication to both work and family.
Equally influential was my mom, who juggled her role as a nursing professor at San Diego State University while pursuing her doctoral degree from USD. I vividly recall her late nights poring over research papers, striving for excellence in both her academic pursuits and her role as a mother. Despite her demanding schedule, she never hesitated to lend a hand with homework or whip up a batch of cookies for school events. Through their tireless efforts, my parents instilled in me not only a strong work ethic but also the importance of prioritizing family amidst professional success. Their example continues to guide me, reminding me that hard work and dedication are not only for personal fulfillment but also for the ones we hold dear.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I believe the three qualities that were most impactful were my passion for preserving memories through photos, my natural inclination for organization, and my constant desire for more education.
For those who are early in their journey and want to develop or improve on these qualities:
1. Passion for Preserving Memories: If you’re passionate about something, immerse yourself in it. Explore different ways to engage with your passion, whether it’s through reading, attending workshops, or simply dedicating time to practice and experiment. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passion, as they can provide support and inspiration along the way.
2. Inclination for Organization: Start by honing your organizational skills in various aspects of your life, not just related to your specific journey. Practice creating systems and structures that help you stay organized and efficient. Look for opportunities to take on organizational tasks or projects, both personally and professionally, to further develop these skills.
3. Desire for More Education: Never stop learning. Seek out opportunities for formal education, such as courses, workshops, or certifications, that align with your interests and goals. Additionally, embrace informal learning experiences, such as reading books, listening to podcasts, or watching videos, to continuously expand your knowledge and expertise. Be open to feedback and constructive criticism, as it can help you identify areas for growth and improvement.
Ultimately, consistency and perseverance are key. Stay committed to developing these qualities over time, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to challenge yourself and push your boundaries.
Your journey is unique, so embrace it wholeheartedly and keep striving for growth and excellence.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been my ability to adapt and thrive in the face of change. With staffing changes occurring in my business, I found myself needing to dive back into the heart of my operations. Initially, I felt overwhelmed by the prospect of being more involved “in” the business rather than “on” it. However, I quickly shifted my perspective and saw this as an opportunity for renewal and revitalization.
Instead of viewing the situation as a setback, I embraced it as a chance to reassess and improve. I approached the challenge with fresh eyes and an open mind, allowing myself to explore new ideas and reevaluate our processes. This shift in mindset not only energized me but also inspired positive change within the business.
As a result, I’ve become more adept at identifying areas for improvement and implementing effective strategies to enhance our operations. By embracing change and viewing it as an opportunity for growth, I’ve experienced significant personal and professional development over the past year.
