Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachel Elberts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Rachel, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Oh man, tackling this issue has been quite the journey for me. Imposter syndrome still creeps in occasionally, but I’ve found a way to deal with it. Embracing the role of a personal trainer and redefining what it means to me has been a game-changer. By making it uniquely my own, I’ve shed the feeling of being an imposter and crafted my ideal version of a personal trainer and wellness coach.
My struggle with feeling like an imposter is strongest when I’m not authentic. I’ve learned to be open about my own fitness challenges, beauty ideals, strengths, and imperfections. Sometimes, I fear doing things I want to do because of self-doubt.
When I see others effortlessly doing something I don’t know how to do, or when I can’t articulate my profound thoughts verbally, that’s when the imposter feelings sneak in. To overcome this, I’ve adopted a more honest and light-hearted approach. I focus on what I can do and know, emphasizing the process over the end result. This way, I’m not tied to specific outcomes, avoiding feelings of failure.
Sometimes, I compare myself to others who seem to be doing better or saying what I want to say. However, I remind myself that we all have unique perspectives, and I can use theirs as positive influences in my life. By staying true to my authentic self and sharing my joy, I can overcome imposter syndrome and continue growing.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a born and raised city kid from Manhattan who always had a passion for sports and physical activity. I played field hockey, softball, and track in high school, and I even learned how to ski and snowboard at a young age. I’ve always been drawn to the power of nature, whether it’s surfing in the ocean or exploring the mountains. After studying Kinesiology at the University of Michigan, I made a daring decision to move to Vail, Colorado, seeking adventure and a deeper connection with the outdoors. Those six years in the Rockies taught me the value of awe and wonder, which became one of my core principles.
During my time in Vail, I met my now-husband, and we embarked on a grand adventure through South East Asia. This experience fueled my desire to connect with people and help them on their journeys. Eventually, we settled in San Francisco, where I combined my love for the outdoors with personal connection, working with various brands and agencies in the outdoor industry.
But I knew there was something more I wanted to do. I wanted to bring people together in nature, to help them improve their health and wellness through movement and community. That’s when Stoke Coach was born.
As a Stoke Coach, I design customized fitness and wellness programs that encourage people to embrace the outdoors, find mindfulness, gratitude, and celebration in their lives. I’m not just a personal trainer; I see myself as an adventure concierge, guiding people toward their goals in an approachable way.
My focus is on progression, taking small steps outside comfort zones to build confidence and strength in both body and mind. By integrating nature into our fitness routines, we become more present and experience awe and wonder in everyday life.
For me, fitness isn’t just about appearances; it’s about feeling strong and accomplished. I’ve found healing and confidence in movement, and I’m driven by the stoke I feel when I achieve something new or take on a challenge.
I believe that when we prioritize feeling good, everything else falls into place. Healthy living isn’t just about exercise and nutrition; it’s about harmonizing all aspects of life.
Based in beautiful Park City, I meet clients wherever they feel most comfortable, whether on the trail, at a lake, or on the slopes. I also work remotely, creating tailored programs for various activities and even developing online courses focused on the dimensions of wellness and making more room for light.
Currently, I’m diving into a 200 HR Yoga Teacher Training, and I’m thrilled to incorporate the knowledge gained into my sessions. Yoga will bring a deeper sense of body awareness, breath, and connection to my clients. Exploring yoga philosophy and asanas will enhance their experiences with themselves and the natural world. I’m eager to offer more one-on-one and remote yoga sessions, as well as sessions out in nature, to create a truly transformative experience.
Additionally, I’m gearing up to relaunch my Winter Conditioning Program. It’s all about getting people stoked and ready for the upcoming winter season. I want to help them be prepared, strong, confident, and injury-free, especially with the rumors of this winter being bigger than the last. If you’re interested, shoot me an email to join the waitlist and be the first to know when the program launches on my new community platform #prayforsnow
And if you’re a surfer, I’ve got something exciting for you too! I’ll be adding a Surf Training program to the platform, designed to help surfers of all levels feel strong and ready to paddle into waves all year long. Stay tuned for these awesome offerings!
I’m proud of Stoke Coach for helping people elevate their health and find time for themselves. It’s not always easy, but I’m committed to supporting my clients every step of the way. Through custom packages and extended programs, I help them invest in themselves and take their health to the next level.
At Stoke Coach, it’s not just about fitness; it’s about discovering the joy of movement and finding flow in the present moment. I’m excited to continue growing and connecting with my clients on their unique journeys to a healthier, happier life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey as a Mindful Movement and Joyful Wellness Stoke Coach, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as particularly impactful:
1. Curiosity: Embracing curiosity and a thirst for knowledge has been crucial. And it’s not just about learning about the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, but the inner workings of yourself. Being curious about my WHYS, my MISSION, My Purpose – not just about my business but my personal day to day life and how to live life intentionally. My advice is to foster a growth mindset and to approach each new challenge as an opportunity to discover new ways to live this life.
2. Adaptability, Non Labeling, and Reinvention : The capacity to pivot, adapt, and reinvent myself at will has been a pivotal element of my journey. When we can flexibly respond to situations and empathize with others, refraining from imposing labels on either them or ourselves, and possess the ability to consistently reshape our preferences, dislikes, and even our self-concept, it becomes empowering. We’re not confined to a fixed framework, nor are we bound to conform to traditional norms or societal expectations. Life becomes a canvas on which we paint our own unique narrative, guided by our personal principles. We define our path on our own terms, forging ahead with a rulebook of our own making.
3. Leaning into Process Over Outcome: Embracing the process over outcomes has truly transformed my perspective and brought immense positivity into my life. In the past, I used to fixate solely on the end goal, often feeling overwhelmed and anxious about reaching it perfectly. But shifting my focus to finding joy in the journey itself has been a game-changer. I’ve found that this approach alleviates stress, allowing me to be more present and engaged in whatever I’m doing. It’s enabled me to embrace failures as stepping stones, enhancing my learning and personal growth. By valuing the process, I’ve become more open to creativity and letting go of what I think the end product should look like and let the journey guide it into what it is supposed to become.
For those early in their journey, my advice is:
1. Embrace Curiosity and Self-Discovery: Let curiosity be your compass. Take time to explore your “whys”, core desired feelings, and craft an intentional mission statement – both in your business and personal life that you can use as your North Star.
2. Navigate with Adaptability and Freedom: Redefine the rules, write your own story, and crafting a path that reflects your unique principles.
3. Find Pleasure in the Journey: One of the most transformative shifts you can make is to prioritize the journey over the destination. Amidst the hustle and bustle, seek the pleasure of the present moment. Feel the joy in every step, even the setbacks. Embrace failures as opportunities for growth, letting go of the need for perfection. Trust in the process, letting your experiences shape your outcome organically. This shift in focus will lead to a lighter heart and a more fulfilling journey.
4. Connect Physical Activity with Mental Well-Being: Recognize the deep connection between physical activity and mental health. Engaging in mindful movement isn’t just about toning your body; it nurtures your mind too. The act of moving with awareness, of being present in each stride, can have a profound impact on your mental state. Embrace this synergy – let your body’s vitality infuse your mind with clarity and positivity, reminding you of your incredible resilience.
5. Surrender and Detach: Lastly, surrender to the flow of your journey. Detach from rigid expectations and predefined outcomes. Allow your path to unfold naturally, embracing the uncertainty as a chance for growth. Surrendering doesn’t mean giving up; it’s about letting go of control and embracing the beauty of the unknown. This practice liberates you, paving the way for unexpected joys and revelations.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I recently read Ram Dass’ Be Here Now – and it has impacted me in the most incredible way. Here are some nuggets:

– Emphasize the importance of being fully present in the moment.
– Practice mindfulness to cultivate awareness and reduce the constant chatter of the mind.
– Cultivate compassion for yourself and others, recognizing the interconnectedness of all beings.
– Practice acts of kindness and empathy to foster a more compassionate world.
– Learn to let go of attachments, desires, and expectations that cause suffering.
– Embrace the concept of surrender, allowing life to unfold naturally without excessive resistance.
– Trust the process and find peace in accepting the flow of life.
– Focus on inner well-being and balance to lead a more harmonious life.
– Recognize the value of serving others and contributing to the well-being of the world.
– Understand that helping others can also deepen your own sense of purpose and fulfillment.
– Explore the idea that death is not the end, but a continuation of consciousness in a different form.
– Live a purpose-driven life by aligning your actions with your core values and beliefs.
– Set meaningful intentions and goals that contribute to your growth and the well-being of others.
– Practice self-reflection to stay on course and make conscious choices.
