We recently connected with Rachel Cole and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
Ah! Well, self-care usually has some underlying motive, as an entrepreneur. For example, I’m a habitual Solidcore and Soulcycle goer, which helps me stay in shape and release stress, but also it helps me create a more disciplined professional life. Other days, I take long walks with my dog along the southern tip of Manhattan, which is really more me talking business with girlfriends or listening to podcasts to generate ideas. And my good night’s sleep is usually more like a power nap with my phone or notebook for ideas within an arm’s teach. From a purely business standpoint, I’d say hiring the right team also feels like a form of self-indulgence, because it enables me to focus on and respond to what’s most pressing – sometimes, quite literally, from the reformer machine. With that all being said, I feel that I don’t really have too many pure indulgences; except for weekly massages followed by frozen yogurt, which are a non-negotiable in my book!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As the principal of Rachel Cole Art Advisory, a New York-based firm, I specialize in the placement of contemporary art, with a particular focus on championing minority artists. What truly sets our service apart is a commitment to trust, transparency, inclusivity, and communication. In a world where art can often feel inaccessible, we’re here to bridge the gap and curate beauty that speaks to everyone.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey leading a New York-based art advisory firm, three key qualities were crucial were: expertise, vision, and integrity. My background in art history and psychology served as my secret weapons, allowing me to navigate the complex interplay between art and its audience, make savvy decisions, and spot game-changing artists before they hit the mainstream. And lastly, operating with integrity was my guiding principle, offering a genuine, transparent approach in an often opaque industry. For those ready to embark on their career journey, I pass on this wisdom that someone very close to me passed onto me: “find your teachers.” Seek out knowledge and mentorship relentlessly. Whether it’s art’s nuances or the unexpected, arming yourself with knowledge, tenacity, and grit will make you not only survive, but thrive. But, also, pay attention in math class – you would be shocked about how much math I do on a daily basis!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
To me, art doesn’t just belong in galleries and museums; it breathes life into spaces, transforms environments, and creates a home. I would love to partner with more interior designers and realtors – email me or slide into my DMs!
