We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Radhika Deshmukh-McDiarmid. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Radhika below.
Radhika, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My parents started over in the US at the ages of 34 and 36. I can’t imagine building a life in a new country with two young kids and no built-in community! I definitely learned my work ethic from them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a film photographer who calls Durham, NC home. I’m constantly inspired by my travels, the three’ish books I’m reading or listening to at any given time, and my two beautiful family. We blend documentary and editorial styles to capture weddings and events around the world, and also photograph families, brands, and portraits in our studio here at home.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Fail fast: make mistakes, experiment often with your craft or skills, and pursue constant growth and learning. 2) Find trustworthy mentors who you can learn from — they are everywhere, often outside of your industry or art form, and will serve as invaluable guides on your journey.
3) Be willing to be bad. It’s the first, necessary step in becoming good.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I love working with other entrepreneurs and small business owners to create imagery that represents them and, in the process, grow and learn from each other. Whether an editorial art project or simply a branding session, I enjoy collaborating to create work that reimagines the norm, honors story and meaning, and allows me to work with others in my community.
