Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rahel Baker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rahel, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
With the grace of God, this journey has been quite extraordinary – I entered college as a first-generation student with the expectation that I had to pursue a career as a doctor, lawyer, or accountant. Coming from a humble background, I understood from an early age that I needed to make something of my life, which is a daunting task for anyone. I changed my major several times during undergrad, taking a while to find my path. Graduating during the 2008 recession made job hunting even more challenging. I remember working various jobs, realizing my natural affinity for connecting with people and my interest in business and finance. However, it wasn’t until I discovered Human Resources that I found a way to merge these passions. For someone like me, from my background, there’s so much you don’t know until you start researching. I delved into different HR-focused master’s programs across the country, determined to find one that would lead to a promising career. Fortunately, I found the right fit and pursued my master’s degree. My journey has always felt like that of an underdog. Despite the challenges, I persevered, found employment, navigated through different roles, and eventually blended my strengths. The key was staying true to myself and resisting external pressures, even when well-meaning loved ones offered advice that I knew didn’t fit my vision for what how I wanted to live my life.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities stand out as real game-changers: authenticity, attitude, and aptitude.
Authenticity: Being genuine and true to yourself is everything. Embrace your quirks, passions, and values – they’re what make you stand out in a crowd. My advice to those starting out is to dig deep and get to know yourself inside out. Figure out what makes you tick and own it. Authenticity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s the secret sauce to building meaningful connections and finding success on your own terms.
Attitude: Keeping a positive mindset has been a total game-changer for me. No matter what life throws your way, maintaining a can-do attitude can turn obstacles into opportunities. Surround yourself with positive vibes, seek out mentors who lift you up, and remember that your attitude shapes your reality. So, stay optimistic, roll with the punches, and watch how things fall into place.
Aptitude: In today’s fast-paced world, being a lifelong learner is non-negotiable. Stay hungry for knowledge, seek out new experiences, and never stop growing. Whether it’s honing your existing skills or picking up something totally new, invest in yourself relentlessly. Embrace the digital age – there’s a wealth of information and resources at your fingertips. Soak it all in and keep pushing your boundaries.
Own your authenticity, cultivate a positive mindset, and never stop learning. The journey is yours for the taking, so seize every opportunity, embrace every challenge, and watch yourself win.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I openly acknowledge my struggle with anxious thoughts.. It’s a challenge I face, but I’ve learned strategies to cope and grow from it. My go-to approach is to focus on staying grounded and present. I remind myself to take things one step at a time and concentrate on what’s within my control. Over the years, I’ve fell in love with mindfulness techniques, like deep breathing or meditation, which helps center me and think things through in a way that brings clarity. I also lean on my support system—whether it’s talking to a friend or mentor.
In addition, I’ve found having healthy outlets to be crucial. For me, it could be going for a walk, writing in a journal, or getting lost in a creative project. These activities provide a constructive way to channel my energy and emotions. I’ve also learned to harness my insecurities into something productive. For example, when I feel doubtful, I use it as fuel to push myself out of my comfort zone and tackle new challenges. It’s about embracing vulnerability and using it as a catalyst for personal growth.
For those who find themselves on their own, I understand how tough it can be. Please know that you’re not alone, and I encourage you to gently explore what works best for you in navigating through it.
