Meet Raphael Bahindwa

We recently connected with Raphael Bahindwa and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Raphael, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
My parents are very generous people, and I really do think that’s where I got it from.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a Fine Artist disciplined in Painting, emanates from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I received my B.F.A. in Painting from SCAD Atlanta. Throughout my time at SCAD, I was able to sharpen my skills on the canvas, and have a strong ability in creating vividly compelling storytelling through painting, which is influenced by mostly my cultural identity in the Congo as well as by my daily experiences.

I developed a style that I believe is my signature style. It’s a usage of vibrant
colors, sometimes just black and white, and a mixture of symbols and icons. I draw a lot of my inspiration from Congolese traditional masks, arrows used by the warriors, and other artifacts emblematic to the Congo. I feel it’s important as an artist representing the Congo, to express some of the turmoil that happens back home through a visually captivating medium like painting.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
You need to be passionate, consistent, and you have to listen to advices that can help you in my journey.

It’s always really tough and a little confusing in the beginning. When you start this journey, you don’t really know what your style is. To find it, you just need some consistency, passion, and you just have to believe in your talent and your process.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They show me what love looks like.
