We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Raven Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Raven below.
Hi Raven, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience finds roots in a lifelong exposure to the realities of entrepreneurship, observing my parents navigate the highs and lows of their own business ventures. Witnessing their journey, marked by persistence and the slow but steady climb toward success, instilled in me an understanding that triumphs are rarely instantaneous. This early exposure to the world of business fostered an entrepreneurial spirit within me. The abrupt transition from a secure full-time role in higher education to pursuing my dream in entrepreneurship by way of mixology and event bartending was a testament to this ingrained drive. As challenges mounted during the pandemic, I embraced adaptability, swiftly transitioning Pour Up Atlanta from in-person to virtual services. This ability to pivot, innovate, and cater to evolving market needs mirrors the resilience cultivated through both personal and professional experiences. My journey, influenced by the tenacity of my young adult experiences and fueled by an unwavering passion for entrepreneurship, has taught me that success is a product of resilience, dedication, and a constant willingness to evolve.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As the Chief Mixologist of Pour Up Atlanta, my passion lies in crafting unforgettable experiences through mixology classes and event bartending. Pour Up Atlanta isn’t just about serving drinks; it’s about curating moments that linger in memories. What excites me most about my work is the ability to transform a simple gathering into a vibrant, engaging experience through the art of mixology. Whether it’s teaching cocktail classes or orchestrating bartending services for events, the thrill lies in creating tailored experiences that resonate with each client’s unique vision. What sets Pour Up Atlanta apart is our commitment to innovation and adaptability. The journey through the pandemic led us to pivot swiftly, transitioning from in-person to virtual services, allowing us to expand our reach and cater to a broader audience. Our focus remains on offering unparalleled mixology classes and event bartending services that not only meet but exceed expectations.
Currently, we’re gearing up for an exciting phase of expansion, exploring new avenues to enhance our offerings. We’re on the cusp of launching our cocktail subscription service, a testament to our dedication to meeting the evolving demands for at-home cocktail experiences. This new venture embodies our commitment to growth and customer satisfaction.
In addition to our services, Pour Up Atlanta is more than just a business; it’s a reflection of resilience, innovation, and a genuine passion for mixology. Our journey is driven by the belief that every event, every cocktail, and every interaction is an opportunity to craft unforgettable moments.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities stand out as pivotal: emotional intelligence, adaptability, and a keen understanding of one’s ego in decision-making. It all starts in the mind, how we think and react, our boundaries. Emotional intelligence has been the cornerstone of navigating relationships, understanding client needs, and fostering a positive work environment. It’s the ability to empathize, communicate effectively, and maintain composure in challenging situations that has truly made a difference.
Adaptability has been instrumental, especially during uncertain times. The capacity to pivot swiftly, embracing change rather than resisting it, allowed Pour Up Atlanta to not just survive but thrive amidst adversity. Flexibility and openness to new ideas have been paramount in meeting evolving market demands.
Furthermore, understanding the role of ego in decision-making has been a valuable lesson. Recognizing when decisions are ego-driven rather than aligned with the business’s goals or values has been crucial. My business consultant often emphasizes that operating from a place of ego can hinder progress. Instead, decisions rooted in emotional intelligence and a clear vision for the brand have led to more successful outcomes.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to prioritize the development of emotional intelligence. It’s a skill that permeates every aspect of entrepreneurship, from client interactions to team dynamics. Additionally, cultivating adaptability is key—being open to change and willing to pivot strategies when necessary, especially in business. Finally, understanding the role of ego in decision-making can prevent roadblocks; it’s about checking intentions and ensuring decisions align with the greater vision rather than personal biases.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When overwhelmed, prioritizing mental health has been my guiding principle. Recognizing the importance of inner healing and prioritizing self-care has been a transformative journey. For me, mental well-being is paramount—it’s the foundation that allows me to navigate challenges effectively.
In 2023, my sole focus has been on inner work, healing from past traumas, and nurturing mental resilience. This has been a conscious effort, placing mental health at the forefront. My routine reflects this commitment—I prioritize the gym, church, and therapy above all, ensuring I’m in the best mental state to pursue my goals and operate at my peak ‘flow.’
When overwhelmed, my coping strategies revolve around fostering inner peace. I turn to prayer or listen to sermons by Sarah Jakes Roberts, finding solace and guidance in spiritual practices. Additionally, reaching out to trusted friends for support and guidance is invaluable. This inner circle, comprised of remarkable individuals, has been instrumental in my success. They offer unwavering support, not just personally but also in business tasks when needed. Our reciprocal care and support form the backbone of our collective success.
Meditation also plays a crucial role in restoring balance and clarity during overwhelming moments. The focus on mental well-being not only ensures personal resilience but also enhances my ability to lead and innovate within Pour Up Atlanta. Prioritizing mental health isn’t just a personal choice; it’s a fundamental aspect that underpins my professional success and the success of those within my inner circle.
