Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ray Mitchell Jr.. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ray, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
My mother wasn’t able to finish high school because she had me and my brothers as a teenager. However, I have witnessed her overcome insurmountable odds to build a career in human resources. She achieved this through hard work, adapting to changes in technology, and developing valuable skills. Through her, I have learned that two things can always help me overcome any disadvantages I may encounter: skill and adaptability. I believe that if I work hard and persistently adapt to changes in my environment, I can develop valuable skills in the areas where I strive to make an impact.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Absolutely. I am an independent filmmaker dedicated to writing and directing stories that delve into the darker aspects of the human condition. My work aims to shed light on the complexities of human nature and explore the depths of emotions and experiences that are often overlooked or ignored. Through my films, I strive to challenge societal norms and provoke thought and discussion about the complexities of the human experience. I am currently developing multiple projects, but the one I am most excited about is an awarded screenplay I wrote for a micro-budget feature film titled FIGHT FOR IT. The story is about a teenage boxing prodigy who quits the sport after his mother dies. Then, after a decade of poverty, he weighs an opportunity to escape the ghetto by facing his grief and stepping back into the ring.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I initially believed that years working high risk operatioins in federal law enforcement would hinder an artistic environment. Still, that experience turned out to be my biggest ally. Years of writing reports for law enforcement cases taught me to paint transparent and comprehensive pictures with my words. Also, Working for an Agency that tackles Human, Weapons, and Drug Trafficking, has given me a well of material to pull from. In addition, I’ve taken multiple writing, directing, and acting classes, which helped me develop a foundation. If I had to narrow it down to three skills, qualities, or areas of knowledge it would be my leadership skill, my attitude of gratitude, and my knowledge of human behavior.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely! I’m a team guy. I believe working with a team to accomplish a specific goal is one of the most amazing experiences we can have. I’d like to collaborate with open-minded people with a genuine love for stories that inspire the ordinary to believe they can become extraordinary. My outlook on life and what I bring to the table is limited to my personal experiences. I want to collaborate with people from different walks to paint the most impactful pictures possible. Building a team, strategizing, training, adapting to obstacles, executing, and ultimately winning is what I live for.
