We recently connected with Rebekka Lien and have shared our conversation below.
Rebekka , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’m Asian, I’m Taiwanese and many times I am the only one in the room, everyone else is not Asian. I try not to look at my race or my skin color, I try to see everyone as human, but there are times I feel like people talk down to me because I’m Asian or especially an Asian woman.
I don’t think they realize it, but innately they are racist towards me because they think I won’t speak back. I feel their eyes looking down on me, I see it in the way they talk to me, they are condescending. I’m not talking about everyone, I’m talking about a few people.
When I mention this to others they don’t see it because they are not Asian. I’ve been yelled at, screamed at, talked down to in rooms that only have one Asian and it’s a horrible feeling. I have learned to be effective and successful by telling people how I feel. Even if I feel the deepest fear in my gut, I speak up for myself.
If I feel like people are condescending towards me I speak up for myself, I say how I feel even if I am shaking at my core. This has caused me to be successful because I am not sitting there holding my tongue, but I am allowing myself to be brave and trudge forward with tenacity, courage, elegance.
I used to be the girl that got bullied and got called a FOB (fresh off the boat) even by Asian Americans, but I sit here today to say that I will no longer be bullied. I choose to stand up for myself and even if people gaslight me and tell me they’re not yelling at me, I will continue to speak up and speak my truth.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an actress, comedian, life coach and motivational speaker. I am also a fashion designer, cellist, pianist and dancer. I speak from my heart. My goal is to tell my story to the world. I was born in Hamburg, Germany and moved to Taiwan when I was 5. When I was 8 years old, my dad cheated on my mom and my mom brought my brother and I to America. I have gone through extreme hardships, financially and emotionally. I didn’t see my dad for 10 years nor did I have the opportunity to talk to him.
My goal in life is to help others that have been victimized by life and show them that they can truly achieve their dreams. No one is a victim. We are all victors. If you know that you are enough, you can do anything in life!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I grew up Christian and my faith has encouraged me to keep going even when everything looks awful. My faith has given me the strength to continue when I felt hopeless. My mother is another reason I am here today, she showed me that anything is possible. She was not an easy person to get along with but learning how to communicate with her showed me how to communicate with those that are difficult to talk to. Another quality I have within myself is risk-taking.
I am a strong believer in taking risks. If you are scared out of your mind, go and do it! If you feel uncomfortable, great! If you feel petrified, jump. You don’t learn driving by sitting in the car, you learn by hitting the gas pedal!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would love to collaborate with filmmakers, screenwriters, producers, artists, musicians, photographers, youtubers. I myself have a YouTube channel and I am almost at 1000 followers. I would like to create films, docuseries, and content that tell peoples’ personal stories.
I am here for the underdogs. I want to see people who didn’t grow up with money, who struggled like I did come to the forefront and win. But I also want to meet people who have morals, faith and ethics.
I can’t be bought. If I feel like something is not right, I won’t do it. I trust my gut and I trust my spirit. I’d love to work with people who have heart and who have a story to tell. I’d like to work with you and create something amazing, whether it’s a podcast episode, a travel show, or an interview. Please contact me if you’d like to collaborate. Please direct message me on Instagram – https://instagram.com/rebekkalien
My next big goal is to create travel show and be the host of the show! I love traveling, backpacking and eating new foods! I’ve personally backpacked to 30 plus countries!
