We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Regina Craig a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Regina , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
This is an amazing question. I actually got my work ethic from my parents. All of my life I have known my parents to be hard workers who instilled in me that nothing comes for free, and that hard work was essential in order to receive the things that you want. I was also taught that being self dependent and having the ability to find your own way, make your own way and be able to take care of yourself from it was super important. As I got older, I understood the importance of integrity and that intern made my work ethic even better, because no matter what even when it didn’t benefit me, I knew that working hard would get me where I wanted to go.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
A little bit about me,Hmm.. well I am a make up artist who has been doing this for almost 20 years now. I feel like it is My calling and I absolutely feel like it is my purpose. The feeling of making someone else feel more beautiful in their skin has what’s kept me in this game for so long. I definitely stumbled upon it on accident as I was not a make up artist or wasn’t really into it growing up outside of the normal teenage girl in young Lady. When I got into make up artistry, at first, it was simply because the women in cosmetics made more money, and I had a young child to take care of. But it’s once I got there that I realize that it was exactly where I needed to be and the feelings and the smiles that something as simple as a lipstick put on a woman’s face or a persons face, for that matter just resonated with me . Over the years my brand has really changed of course with the times. When I started make up artistry, it was all about all of the colors and putting as much makeup on your face as you could but I love the way that it’s going right now and because of that I have had to change my style of course. But women wanting to look just beautifully elevated. I am absolutely loving this era I have always focused I’m just being an artist, but I also got into teaching make up ARTISTRY so my next move that I would love to make would be actually given classes and getting more on the education side.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back the qualities/SKILLS/areas of knowledge that were most impactful, as one, always having integrity because you will definitely be put in positions where, doing the right thing can garner no results at that moment. Having patience, knowing that everything that’s for you you will receive and to be able to clap for others and their prosperity, and be willing to learn and never thinking that you know it all, if I could give any advice to someone early in their journey is to just be open, to listening to learning to doing and always be present ,represent yourself at all times because you never know who you are talking to
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think, knowing your strings is so important and making sure that you cultivate those but I also do believe that learning new things and being well-rounded and investing in improvements is so important. Also, because again you can be asked to do something that’s not in your comfort zone, but being prepared for it is the absolute best. I always have live by this motto of even if I never use it I’d rather know it then to not. For instance, I’ve been put in situations where they didn’t or where I didn’t necessarily have a product needed to complete a look for a client, but my ability and my willingness to learn how to mix and match made it easy for me to find another way to get the same results and the client never knowing and never having to be worried that I wasn’t sufficient and efficient at what I was doing
