Meet Reine Krief

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Reine Krief. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Reine below.

Reine, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I think that there are people that can’t help but be creative. They come in all shapes and sizes, with diverse backgrounds, personalities, and talents. In my case, I tend to be open-minded and curious, eager to explore new ideas, perspectives, and experiences. I also have a strong sense of wonder and I am constantly seeking inspiration from the world around me. There is also a deep-rooted need to express my passion for what I create and a willingness to learn from my mistakes. I view set-backs and challenges as an opportunity for growth and innovation. I surround and immerse myself with people, places and things that inspire and support me. Collaborations, participating in workshops, networking groups and events also bring a fresh perspective and new ideas that also help inspire and keep my creativity alive.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Since its inception in 2016, I’ve poured my heart into sourcing curated semi-precious stones, top-notch components, and repurposed vintage treasures to weave into cohesive handmade collections. Alongside the jewelry and personalized custom design services, we now offer Italian leather handbags, apparel, and various accessories.

Rooted in the artsy enclave of Solana Beach, California, BijouRocks has evolved into more than just a storefront. It’s a creative space housing not only our shop but also Krief Design Studio & Gallery. This space isn’t just about displaying our latest creations; it’s a canvas for private events, trunk shows, and even fine art exhibitions. We host quarterly ART BLK events to meet the artists and artisans of North Cedros in a celebration of creativity and community.

My journey to BijouRocks started in Montreal, Canada, where I honed my skills in fashion and interior design. But when the chance to relocate to California came, I embraced it wholeheartedly. Adapting to a new country was daunting, but it eventually fueled my determination to succeed.

As my four children grew, I had more time and delved deeper into my craft, mastering the art of hand-knotted jewelry—a technique that marries silk with stones and beads, ensuring their beauty endures. My passion for vintage and antique jewelry led me to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces, blending tradition with innovation.

What began as a personal pursuit has blossomed into a thriving venture with a devoted following across North America. Responding to demand, I expanded my offerings under Reine Krief Designs, introducing collections of Italian leather handbags, silk scarves, and apparel. You can find my designs both online and in the BijouRocks boutique, where every piece tells a story of passion and creativity.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe what was most impactful in my journey would be the confidence to put myself out there, the ability to recognize and accept criticism to then make changes to improve, and lastly offer a commitment to quality in both product and service.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
There is no doubt as to who has been most impactful in in my journey, it is my husband and partner, Michael Krief. He is an amazing artist, a second generation footwear designer by trade with extensive corporate training. He has been my support system all along my journey both personally and professionally. I would even say that it is really thanks to him that I am even on this journey. He saw the business potential and helped me to start my business in 2016.
