We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Renarda Joy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Renarda , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Navigating imposter syndrome in the male-dominated real estate industry was a significant challenge. As a woman, self-doubt crept in, fueled by constant comparisons and the fear of not being taken seriously. To overcome this hurdle, I deliberately shifted my mindset. I recognized that imposter feelings were a shared experience, not an indication of personal inadequacy. I began acknowledging both big and small accomplishments, reframing them as indicators of competence.
Seeking mentorship became a cornerstone of my journey. Engaging with individuals who had successfully navigated similar challenges not only provided valuable guidance but also reassured me that my path was valid. Their encouragement and shared experiences played a crucial role in dispelling the notion that I didn’t belong in the industry.
In addition, I wholeheartedly embraced continuous learning. Attending workshops, conferences, and educational programs not only expanded my knowledge base but also bolstered my confidence. Gaining expertise in my field became a powerful tool for dismissing feelings of inadequacy.
Building a supportive network emerged as a crucial aspect of overcoming imposter syndrome. Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who believed in my capabilities helped counteract the isolation often associated with imposter syndrome. Their encouragement acted as a potent antidote to self-doubt, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.
Finally, I learned to celebrate both successes and failures. Each setback became a valuable lesson, reinforcing the idea that growth is an ongoing process. Embracing a growth mindset enabled me to view challenges not as threats to my competence but as opportunities for improvement.
This transformative journey involved self-reflection, mentorship, continuous learning, and the establishment of a supportive community. Today, I can confidently assert that recognizing and addressing imposter syndrome has played a pivotal role in my personal and professional growth.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back at my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been particularly impactful:
1. Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks and persist in the face of challenges has been crucial. Real estate, like any entrepreneurial venture, comes with its share of ups and downs. Developing resilience allowed me to navigate obstacles, learn from failures, and keep moving forward.
• Advice: For those early in their journey, I would emphasize the importance of building resilience. Understand that challenges are part of the process, and each setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Surround yourself with a supportive network, seek mentorship, and view challenges as stepping stones toward success.
2. Continuous Learning: In a dynamic field like real estate, staying informed and continuously learning is essential. Whether it’s market trends, investment strategies, or industry regulations, staying ahead of the curve has been a key factor in making informed decisions and adapting to changes.
• Advice: Never stop learning. Attend workshops, conferences, and educational programs. Read extensively and stay curious about the evolving landscape of your industry. Seek out mentors who can provide valuable insights and guidance based on their experiences.
3. Networking and Relationship Building: Building a strong professional network has opened doors, provided opportunities, and offered valuable support throughout my journey. Establishing meaningful connections within the industry has been instrumental in overcoming challenges and accessing resources.
• Advice: Invest time in networking and relationship building, but don’t make the mistake I did by simply hoarding business cards over time without a clear understanding of where or how we met, or the potential synergies we could have explored. Be intentional in your connections. Attend industry events, join relevant associations, and connect with professionals in your field. Building a network not only provides a support system but also creates opportunities for collaboration and growth.
In summary, resilience, continuous learning, and effective networking have played pivotal roles in my journey. My advice for those starting out is to embrace challenges with resilience, commit to lifelong learning, and prioritize building a network of supportive and like-minded individuals. These qualities will not only contribute to personal and professional development but also enhance the overall journey in any entrepreneurial pursuit.
