Meet René Agee

We were lucky to catch up with René Agee recently and have shared our conversation below.

René, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
My philosophy on taking risks revolves around the belief that the worst outcome is a simple “no.” This perspective minimizes the fear of rejection or failure, empowering you to pursue opportunities with a bold attitude. By embracing the idea that a refusal is the most you can face, you’ve created a mindset that encourages proactive decision-making and risk-taking in various aspects of your life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have always been an entrepreneurial individual with a diverse professional background, having spent two decades in the apparel industry before venturing into the dynamic world of beauty. Your journey is marked by a successful four-year ownership of a cutting-edge salon, where my expertise in apparel has uniquely influenced the salon’s approach, bringing a fashion-forward perspective to hairstyling, nail art, and makeup. I have recently expanded my entrepreneurial footprint by founding an apparel embellishment company, specifically targeting small businesses seeking product development and unique embellishments. My ability to seamlessly transition between industries showcases my adaptability and visionary spirit, leaving a lasting impact on both fashion and beauty landscapes.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. **Persistence:** My unwavering persistence has been a cornerstone of my journey. In the face of challenges and setbacks, I have consistently demonstrated the resilience to persevere. Whether it was navigating the intricacies of the apparel industry for two decades or overcoming hurdles in salon ownership, my ability to stay focused on my goals, learn from experiences, and keep pushing forward has been a driving force behind my success.

2. **Business Sense:**
My keen business sense has been a strategic asset throughout my professional endeavors. With a background rooted in the apparel and Accounting industries, I have translated my understanding of market dynamics, consumer trends, and operational efficiency into the beauty sector. Owning a salon and subsequently starting an apparel embellishment company reflect my astute decision-making, strategic planning, and the ability to identify viable business opportunities. My acumen in balancing creativity with pragmatic business considerations has set me apart in the competitive landscape.

3. **Creativity:**
Creativity is the artistic thread that runs through my entire journey. From crafting innovative salon marketing to extending my creative flair into apparel embellishments, my ability to think outside the box has been a driving force. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about infusing a distinctive and memorable touch into everything you do. This creative mindset has not only elevated the customer experience in my salon but has also brought a fresh and imaginative approach to the world of apparel embellishments, resonating with the small businesses I serve.

Together, the trifecta of persistence, business sense, and creativity forms a powerful combination that has propelled me forward, making a lasting impact on both the beauty and apparel industries.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Partners often play a crucial role in personal and professional development. My husband has been a huge support system for me. With his keen sense of business, he has provided valuable perspectives and a great sounding board for ideas. Whether through shared responsibilities, mutual goal-setting, or simply being a supportive presence, having a partner who is understanding and encouraging can greatly contribute to overcoming challenges and fostering personal and professional growth.
