We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rex Ju Ju. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rex Ju below.
Rex Ju, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My parents immigrated to America extremely poor, not speaking English. They instilled the quality of resilience into me from an early age to my twin brother and I. Because they needed to thrive in a new country with no knowledge of the language, they taught my brother and I that being average was never enough. Through my upbringing and personal experience of being one of few Asian Americans in small town Iowa, I knew it was important to not follow the pack. I’ve always compared myself with the best version of myself as opposed to others – this always sets an extremely lofty goal for myself. Self improvement has always been my mantra growing up.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I studied Engineering in College because I was always an analyticial thinker. I learned building relationships and interpersonal skills was the key success in finding fulfillment in my career. This led me into a supply chain career where I could use my emotional intelligence to thrive in a business facing role.
Growing up as one of the few Asian Americans in small town Iowa drove me to get into acting and commercials. I saw very little representation and wanted to be apart of the movement. The two different career paths have helped build me into the person I am today.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Building strong relationships, self-belief, and curiosity have been my three top qualities/skills that have landed me where I am today. I advise folks to never lose self belief and remain curious as opportunities are all around us. Without these two qualities, you will never live up to your truest potential. It was hard to imagine graduating at the top of my engineering class, managing a team of supply chain professionals, and appearing in media/television opportunities without self-belief and remaining curious.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
“Dont Sweat the Small Stuff” is one of my favorite books and has encouraged me to live a balanced life with perspective and purpose. There will always be ups and downs in life and it’s all about your response to these things. You can choose to respond with a positive and growth minded outlook or be a victim to circumstances. I’ve always strived to see the positives in opportunities, while de-personalizing feedback. Feedback is our fuel to self improve, not a deterrent.
