Meet Rich Taylor

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rich Taylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Rich, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I believe that experiencing imposter syndrome is a common aspect of life, with its duration varying based on individual perspectives. When I aspired to become a professional photographer, my inner dialogue echoed doubts about my talent, highlighting the fierce competition within the field. Rather than succumbing to these negative thoughts, I used them as a catalyst for self-improvement. I turned the script around, challenging myself to prove those doubts wrong. This journey involved intense dedication, comprising long nights of hard work, learning, and overcoming self-doubt while editing my photos. Drawing inspiration from master photographers, I asked myself, ‘If they can do it, why can’t I?’ I embraced the idea that the only person hindering my progress was myself. Through this experience, I gained a crucial lesson: every mistake is an opportunity for growth. My journey, filled with its fair share of errors, shaped me into the photographer I am today. Overcoming imposter syndrome led to the rewarding outcome of being recognized as a published and awarded high-end photographer, earning respect within the industry.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Growing up on Long Island, NY, art has always held a special place in my heart and soul. In my early endeavors, I pursued the path of a hand artist, honing my skills in the intricate Rapidograph technique to create detailed pictures with ink and dots. While this artistic genre possessed its own beauty, I came to the realization that it wasn’t my true calling but rather a crucial step in my personal journey.

Turning towards psychology, I found a new passion that resonated not only with myself but also with those around me. Family, friends, and even strangers acknowledged my aptitude for psychology, reinforcing my belief in this possible chosen path. However, it was not the right time to pursue this passion as the introduction of computers to the workplace marked a significant shift.

Sitting in front of my first computer, I grasped its workings, including the Macintosh OS and its programs. My talent in graphic design was quickly recognized, with my proficiency in Photoshop earning praise from a teacher on my very first day using it.

After thriving as a graphic and web designer in New York, I sought a change and moved to South Florida. Continuing my success as an entrepreneurial graphic and web designer, I still embraced my love for psychology, I contemplated returning to school once again, but found a newfound passion in photography. Taking a leap of faith, I invested in a camera and lessons, learning at an accelerated pace. This journey led to becoming a respected master photographer, with published and awarded work.

Life took an unexpected turn that led me to Charlotte, NC, where I surprisingly flourished as the #1 creative photographer for four years in a row. I had the privilege of capturing significant moments for esteemed clients and events, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, The Beagle Freedom Project, The Junior Diabetes Association, Operation: Warm, Tito’s Liquor, Blender’s Eyewear, WoodForest Bank, and serving as the official photographer for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, The Pride Parade, and the Charlotte International Airport. My success and respect as a photographer in the Charlotte area became evident.

In early 2020, the Make-A-Wish Foundation hired me, only for the unfolding events of the pandemic to disrupt my plans. I was heartbroken as this was a dream come true only to be taken away. Faced with this unforeseen challenge, I took a bold leap of faith and relocated to Denver, Colorado, without having seen the city beforehand.

Despite the challenges of rebuilding post-pandemic, I’ve remained resilient, continuing my pursuits in photography, graphic/web design, and even delving into the realm of video production. The year 2024 is shaping up to be promising, with my photography prints showcased in high-end establishments and my involvement in notable projects, such as capturing the grand opening of a 6 million-dollar car wash.

Driven by a persistent desire to help others, I made a significant decision in late 2023 to return to school and pursue a life coaching degree. This endeavor has already borne fruit, as I’ve acquired clients, and the feedback has been nothing short of beautiful. I often hear the words “life-changing,” affirming the positive impact of my work.

Reflecting on my journey, I’ve wholeheartedly embraced the notion that life unfolds in its own way, often deviating from our carefully laid plans. Despite the twists and turns, I’ve come to appreciate that life has a way of providing what we truly need, even when it doesn’t align with our immediate wants. The excitement persists as I anticipate the unexpected paths that lie ahead, fully acknowledging that these unexpected turns often lead to the most fulfilling outcomes.

In my professional endeavors, I am a seasoned graphic and web designer, a master photographer, and I am on the path to becoming a professional videographer. Additionally, I am working towards obtaining a professional license as a life coach. When I reflect on this diverse skill set, I realize that it all converges into a singular mission—to bring positivity, joy, and happiness to people in this world. This overarching goal propels me forward, and I am dedicated to making a positive impact through my various creative and coaching pursuits.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Practice self-patience: Recognize that your harshest critic is often yourself. Be kind and patient with your journey, giving yourself credit when it’s deserved, even in moments of mistake. Celebrate the awareness of errors, as it signifies growth.

2. Embrace mistakes: View mistakes as valuable opportunities. My evolution as a photographer is a testament to the lessons learned from errors. Mistakes offer a chance to pause, reflect on what went wrong, learn from the experience, and try again. Applying this principle extends beyond photography—it’s a philosophy that enriches every facet of life. Success in every endeavor may lead to stagnation, while learning from mistakes ensures continuous growth.

3. Discern when to seek help: While it’s tempting to accept assistance readily, true learning often involves taking an active role in problem-solving. When presented with support, consider redirecting it toward guidance rather than a complete solution. Express the desire to be pointed in the right direction and take the initiative to navigate the journey. Striking a balance between seeking help and independently addressing challenges not only fosters personal growth but also builds resilience and strength.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

The economic aftermath of the pandemic has altered spending patterns, and adapting to this reality is crucial as I am finding it challenging to navigate my professional life in Denver, CO. Navigating a world where priorities like putting food on the table take precedence over non-essential services, such as photography sessions, poses a real and understandable challenge. The challenges faced in the art industry during 2023 raise concerns not only for the current year of 2024 but also provoke curiosity about whether this pattern of difficulties will persist in the years to come.

With that said, I trust in my journey, remaining resilient, and with sustained effort over time, I anticipate positive outcomes in my ventures in graphic and web design, photography, and life coaching. Nonetheless, it is crucial for me to acknowledge the industry landscape specifically in Colorado and appreciate the importance of adaptability. Hence, I am earnestly considering the possibility of relocating to Fort Lauderdale, FL. Conversations with my loyal clients have shown remarkable enthusiasm for the prospect of my return. I’ve also discovered that my heart cherishes the idea of returning to South Florida. Almost feeling like I have come full circle.

Whether I remain in Colorado or move to South Florida, I trust in my journey. I am confident that wherever God guides me to be, I will thrive and succeed in my career.
