We recently connected with Rita Patel and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rita, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I would contribute my mom for my work ethics. My mom worked until her retirement age. She never backed down from a job or challenges she faced during work. She kept hope and positivity all throughout her career. I’ve been working since I was 16 and my first job was McDonald’s. I worked toward saving for a trip to go back to my home country the United Kingdom. I feel like working towards a goal gives me motivation to work hard and strong. So every time an opportunity arises I find something I’d like to work for and I swear it helps me set my work ethic for that goal and give it all I got. I’m grateful for each opportunity. You don’t always succeed but learn from those losses, and gain a perspective as to how to face challenges and improve work ethics.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I started my new career as a luxury travel concierge and specialist around 4 years ago. My friends encouraged me to pursue and opportunity in the travel industry, after they traveled with me around the world. I curated all of our trips from beginning to end with excursions and beautiful hotels, all 4 and 5 star in some of the most exotic and unique destinations in the world. My friends loved having someone do all the legwork and having the most memorable trips they could have ever imagined. It was definitely my calling and after a bit of pressure by my friends, here I am today. I also own a popular and highly successful Deli/Cafe in Suwanee, Georgia which is my main enterprise. I love being busy and always having something to do. I love new opportunities, meeting new people, many who have become close friends. I have been an entrepreneur for 36 years working alongside my husband from hospitality to restauranteurs to travel advisor. I love what I do everyday.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I started working at a very young age, I am always willing to learn new skills. I feel this has helped me with the multiple businesses I’ve owned. There have been some downfalls, but you have to learn from your mistakes. I’ve always been motivated to advance my skills and take it up to a next level. I also work towards a goal, I feel that helps me to work harder and stronger. As with any businesses, it is a risk, it’s up to you to make it work and be successful. Failure is not an option in my book. Ask people for advice and teach you skills. I had no idea how to handle our business finances, but I reached out to an accountant to show me how to do multiple tasks, such as payroll, ledgers and financial bookkeeping, and now I handle mostly all of our paperwork and office accounting.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I would contribute my mom for my work ethic which has helped me to be successful. My mom worked until her retirement age. She never backed down from a job or challenges she faced during work. My mom wasn’t proficient in full English, or had any management skills but she kept hope and positivity all throughout her career. She actually became a manager of multiple McDonald’s locations with absolutely no college or management experience. She was just a great trustworthy employee and I was proud that someone put their trust and faith into my mom to take care of their businesses. I learned a lot from her work ethic, which is probably why I want to be just like her.
